Publisher's summary

Pride & Prejudice meets alternate history.

Six years after Napoleon's invasion of England....

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a traitor. He even admits to collaborating with Napoleon's troops. And Elizabeth Bennet despises all traitors.

But she can't make sense of Darcy. He doesn't act like a traitor. He risks his own safety to save young women from the French. And how can she despise a man who loves puppies? Something about him doesn't add up - and she finds him far too attractive.

Then Darcy's carefully constructed world crumbles, and he must entrust his closest-held secret to Elizabeth. To protect that secret, Elizabeth must disappear entirely, leaving her family and Darcy behind, to plunge herself into the dizzying world of fashionable London and the dangers of the Loyalist Resistance. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Darcy is determined to find Elizabeth. Now that she knows the truth about him, there's nothing to keep them apart - nothing, that is, until the day Darcy is forced to choose between his country and the life of the woman he loves....

Fabulous 5-Star P&P Variation

If you could sum up Conceit & Concealment in three words, what would they be?

Napoleon invades England

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm always a fan of Elizabeth and Darcy, but I especially liked their new dimensions as Abigail Reynolds explored what they might be like if they suffered under French occupation. As for new characters, I enjoyed the real Princess Charlotte, who is disguised for much of the book as another well-known character.

What does Elizabeth Klett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really enjoyed her French accents. They added a real flare to the story that I wouldn't have received from just reading the book.

Any additional comments?

I have loved many of Abigail Reynolds books in the past, and this one is topping the charts. You can tell that Abigail Reynolds did her research, and it was fun to hear about it at the end of the book after the epilogue. Overall this has become one of my favorite variations, and I highly recommend you pick it up if you're in the mood for a new take on Jane Austen's beloved novel. You'll love this Lizzy and this Darcy as much as the first.

1 of Abigail's Best & Elizabeth Klett is a Delight

What did you love best about Conceit & Concealment?

The adventurous turn that Abigail Reynolds took with these classic Austen characters. It was romantic without being overdone, well written and exciting! There were some twists I did not expect, and new characters I really enjoyed.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Without giving anything away, the character of Georgiana Darcy. Her story arc was unexpected and very entertaining!

What about Elizabeth Klett’s performance did you like?

During times when I could not sit and read the printed edition of the book, I listened to the dulcet tones of Elizabeth Klett as she shared the story with me. Ms. Klett’s performance was excellent, and I would liken her accent to that of a mature Emma Watson, also known as Hermoine Granger of the Harry Potter films. Her tone was appropriately posh and intelligent, without being distracting. I was able to work through household chores or run my errands in the car as I listened in.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

During a plot twist early on in the book, I literally gasped out loud in surprise.

Any additional comments?

A job well done by Abigail Reynolds and Elizabeth Klett!

Alternative History!

There is so much to love about this book! First off, we see London as it would be if the French had won the Napoleonic Wars. Mr. Darcy is not a stuffy, wealthy landowner, but a man loyal to the crown. So much so he is willing to sacrifice life in his beloved Pemberly, to live a very different existence.

Elizabeth and Darcy meet under the sweetest circumstances, how can she resist a man who loves puppies?

I can't say anymore without blowing the plot, but trust me dear reader, you do want to read this story!

Absolutely amazing!

This may be the best P&P variation I’ve listened to on Audible. The alternate universe that Abigail Reynolds has created is thoroughly spellbinding.

An easy read

This was an enjoyable adaptation. It did not need the P&P tie-in and would have been just as well, if not better, without it. Elizabeth Klentz is one of my favorite narrators and she (as always), brought the characters to life.

Thought Very Long

I love Abigail Reynolds book. The performance was great, but I thought this one was sort like a Harlequin Romance style. I listened through, great performance.

Entertaining Twist to Pride & Prejudice

This was a great alternate reality for Pride & Prejudice. The story was entertaining and very original. I enjoyed the adventure, danger, suspense, romance, and unexpected twists.

The narration was well done and brought the story to life.

This is by far the best variation I have heard from Pride & Prejudice. It is set in an alternate reality where England has been invaded and conquered by the French/Napoleon.

I'm looking forward to reading/listening more books by this talented author.

Love, Love, Love this Audible book!

This book was sensational and I am so sad there is not a sequel. The story was wonderful but the truly best part was the performance by the reader, Elizabeth Klett. I swore there were many readers but it was just her marvelous ability to do many different voices. The story was fun and not trivial. I highly recommend this great book. I didn't want it to end!
