Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Rock Chick series comes a story of love, murder, and second chances....

When small-town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn't be stronger, but the timing couldn't be worse.

Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids and himself is his only priority.

Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that's perfect for them - a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She's learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that's what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.

Hix can't fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta's finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.

But when the first murder that's happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.

In other words, things are definitely...Complicated.

Excellent Mixture of Romance, Mystery, & Mayhem

Any additional comments?

Another well crafted story that expertly intertwines romance, mystery, and murder and keeps the reader riveted. Hix is sheriff in a quiet little town where crime is rare. He moved there to satisfy his wife's demand to live near her parents. Seven years and two children later, Hix and Hope are divorced and he is trying to establish a new home for his children who are now in their teens. Greta moved to the little town to find a safe and peaceful place to care for her brother. Greta is a stunning beauty who catches Hix's eye while he watches her sing at the Do-Drop Club, an upscale restaurant. Hix and Greta have an immediate and lusty attraction that they unsuccessfully try to resist. The sleepy little town is rocked when murders begin to occur that Hix is working to solve."Complicated" is an excellent story with everything we expect from Kristen Ashley. The narration by Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon is perfect.. .

Complicated was a pleasure to my senses!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hix was my favorite character. I loved that he's in his forties. He knows who he is and what he wants. He's a good father and he's smart, sexy, funny and takes care of his own.

Which character – as performed by Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon – was your favorite?

I loved both Lance and Erin. Their voices were perfect for these characters. The were a pleasure to my ears!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I would have loved to have listened to it in one sitting, it was that good.

Any additional comments?

Kristen Ashley always delivers the sexy, strong heroes and the independent, sassy leading ladies. Complicated is a story filled with heat, love, suspense, family and heart. I loved every minute of it. The narrators brought this story to life and kept me in the edge of my seat the entire time. Complicated was a pleasure to my senses and kept me wanting more.

A SUPERNOVA OF SENSATIONS & DELICIOUS COMPLICATION

Kristen Ashley very quickly became an auto-download author for me because her multi-layered stories never disappoint, always entertain and I'm captured from the start by her loveable fictional characters. And, with this plot, KA has outdone and outshone herself as she so skilfully weaved a slow to develop well crafted love story between a vulnerable yet strong Hairdresser/Lounge Singer and a vulnerable yet very alpha Sheriff who'd both experienced love and marriage before. Neither one was looking for love in their small town, neither one was expecting the bag full of complications their relationship would bring, neither one would go unscathed by the challenges brought on by past relationships of various different kinds and I'd like to say neither one let go.. but tut tut that would be a lie.

Detailed descriptions allowed me to conjure up full mental images as each chapter whizzed by telling the story of second chances, stressful situations, small town life, strings, smouldering passion, sizzling chemistry, sexy times, a sinister Mother, a shitty ex wife, a brain-injured son, three torn in two siblings.. and a murder most foul. And I was gripped as it seemed like every chapter threw in new complications, new challenges and new revelations for these two lovers whose rollercoaster romance would be sweet but tested over and over again. However, their HEA destination would be worth every twist, every turn, every tug at their hearts.. and every tear. Dual POV's and Lance and Erin did a fantastic job of narrating this written for Audible love story.

Worth a credit? Definitely.. and, at 18.14 hrs, it's thankfully a COMPLETE story - so no delays to the HEA's, no release dates to watch out for before you lose sight of the intricacies of the daily dimming plot and hallelujah no cliffhangers that'll take another one, two or even three credits before you get the full story. So thank you Kristen and thank you Audible because in this epic emotion filled story is heart, heat, home, humor and happy endings.

awesome start, too long unfortunately... lost me

great story & characters, and I loved the novelty of a Kristen Ashley being told in 2 voices. Unfortunately, as it tends to happen with her recent books, the story lost its momentum and a good third of it felt unnecessary... still 1 of my favorite romance authors!!

trashy

way too much unnecessary dialogue and lengthy sex scenes. The murder mystery was never an integral part of the story, it just dwindled away. I always finish books I start but this was a tough one to listen to to the end.

Good story and characters, but WAY too much explicit sex scenes and foul language, which detracted from the otherwise interesting book.

One sensational audiobook!

What about Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon ’s performance did you like?
Add in the addition of narration and the story is just a like a balm! Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon bring these characters to life!
Like an exploding firecracker that shoots off! Making you catch and savor every second of Kristen Ashley’s infectious brand of storytelling!

Any additional comments?
Complicated is that one sensational audiobook, that you will have you pulling an all-nighter! Not being able to press stop on the audio! For fear a missing some a momentous scene.
The storyline has that magnetic flare from the get-go!. Willing to pull at your emotions, like a tether, a string and blowing your mind in the process!

5 Complicated Stars

Ok I am going to be totally Honest, I might be a little bias because I love most everything Kristen Ashley writes. Sometimes I have to read a book 1 time and love it sometimes 2 or more.

This was a 1 and done for me. I loved it. I love the relationship Hixon has with his kids, with the community. I just loved Hixon.

Greta has not had an easy life but she never lets it get her down not once. She does what needs to be done and she moves on. But when she met Hixon all bets were off.

The connection between these two is undeniable. And you root for them. It’s not easy and it take work. But the end justifies the means right?

I lllloved the narration. Erin Mallon is awesome! And Lance Greenfield does a fantastic job. I already know this is going to be a re-listen.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

Not Complicated Enough For Me

Lord knows I love KA and audiobooks, so I was excited to hear this one when it was announced it would be available exclusive to Audible first. It started off good and as the story began to unfold, I was eager as to how it would all play out, but was sadly disappointed. It had such potential and just fizzled out. Even the epilogue was lacking the usual KA awesomeness.

She's done it again!

KA did her thing yet again and she did it spectacularly!! Hix and Greta were the ish and more!! Loved how this story came together.
I'm not a fan of audible and had to think long and hard about getting this book in this fashion but when it comes to KA the decision wasn't all that hard.
So happy I went with giving audible a try for my fav author.
Congrats Kristen on another story well told!! :)

Loved it!

After an underwhelming couple of audiobooks (not this author) I was delighted when this one drew me in straight away. The story is fantastic as you'd expect from Kristen Ashley and I really liked the use of two narrators as it helped get into the mindset of whichever character was in control. The narrators were brilliant too which is always a massive advantage. The only downside is that it had to end!

Fabulous!

Wow! When Kristen Ashley is good, she is really, really good. Some of her later books have left me feeling a bit cheated, but with this one she is right back on top form.

This book has a fabulous H and h, a very rocky road to romance, amazing side characters, and an absorbing murder mystery. The sex is super hot but thankfully does not dominate the pace of the book. I love that KA features older characters in her book, and how the history of each of them shapes them and the decisions they make. They make mistakes, screw things up in the heat of the moment and then (like we all do) cool down, analyse the situation and realise they have messed up, so then set about to rectify things. I love how we, as readers, realise that this couple are destined to be together by their thoughts, their actions and reactions, even if the couple themselves are still denying the possibility. Life and love in a good KA book is messy, unpredictable, unfair, heartbreaking, exhilarating, funny, heart warming and life affirming; but never, ever, boring. I listened obsessively to get to the end, and then felt regret that the story had ended. All this illustrates just how truly talented KA is as a writer. Special mention must go to the secondary characters featured in this story as KA manages to make us care about so much more than just the central couple in this book.

Dual narration was fabulous. Unusually (but very successfully) the POV was mainly that of the H which enabled the reader to understand him even when he was behaving like a jerk toward the h (which was a lot in the first half of the book!) If you have not listened to KA on audio before, start with this book. It's very long, but the many story lines surrounding the couple never dragged, and I felt real regret when I got to the end.

Loved it

Classic Kristen Ashley, as usual well written characters, amazing H, a bit of a jerk at first, but understandable. The h is amazing and so strong, my eyes watered for her and her brother often during the story. The side characters are lovable and that is one trademark I love from KA. The plot is really good and pages turning, with everything being resolved at the end. Loved it was mainly the H voice throughout the book, reminded me of Golden Trail, and Lance Greenfield performance was great. I just spent nearly 19hr in KA heaven.

Fans of old school Kristen Ashley will rejoice

2.5 stars - It was OK/I liked it

Complicated is an audio only release for the first six months. My review is based on the audio version I listened to.

AUDIO
I am a regular audio book listener and I relisten regularly to other Kristen Ashley books that I enjoy. With the odd exception, I typically first read the written version of a book before listening to the audio version. Having to swap my usual methodology meant I listened more actively than I usually would. It wasn't difficult. If anything, I easier recalled names, places and circumstances as the story went on.

Lance Greenfield and Erin Mallon were the narrators. They did a great job. Their voices were age appropriate. Voice changes for other characters were different enough so that I never wondered who was speaking. And their version of voices for the opposite sex was good. It's a unique skill and I have listened to several audio books where this is poorly done and my enjoyment of the book suffered. I will definitely be on the lookout for other books Lance and Erin have narrated.

My one criticism, and this is not unique to this audio version at all, is on occasion, the tone of the voice does not always reflect the emotion described. If a character is described as sad, happy, angry, tired etc. then the narration should follow. There are times this didn't happen and it caused me to rewind to check if I had missed anything.

Not living in the US nor having a great interest in accents, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the accents. I realise there are regional differences but it's not the kind of detail I focus on. The speech was clear and understandable which means it passes the test for me.

STORYLINE
There are parts I enjoyed and others I thought were underwhelming.

Fans of old school Kristen Ashley will rejoice. Anyone who has enjoyed the Colorado Mountain, Burg, Dream Man, Rock Chick and Magdalene series will likely appreciate the return of such a storyline; a small town, main characters circa 40 years of age, ex wives, children, families and the baggage they bring and a murder to be solved.

The downside of this is I found the overall story to be somewhat stale and a repetition of what has come before. There were many times when the language, mannerisms and even fashions could have been copied from other KA books.

Some of the dramas that occur in the book also felt... perhaps not forced but deliberate? Deliberate in the sense they were used to drive the story and characters but were not in themselves integral to the outcome. Any other incident/circumstance could have just as easily been substituted without the main characters altering course.

My favourite characters were Greta and Andy. They were brilliant and even though it arose from hardship and tragedy, I loved the portrayal of this sister and brother relationship.

I enjoyed learning about Greta's second job as a lounge singer and I liked the music choices. If nothing else this book introduced me to Annie Lennox's song 'Cold'. I've never heard this song before and I loved it. When it's first mentioned in the book I urge you to stop listening/reading the book and listen to the song.

In conclusion, KA fans will likely give this a big thumbs up but for me it's 'same same but different'. Now go Google that term if you're not familiar with it. 🙂

Kristen Ashley has done it again!

I love Kristen Ashley's books. The story was great, characters i became invested in and having the two narrators was a good way to show the two main characters point of view. Loved the ending which I didn't see coming and now just disappointed that I have finished listening to the story.

Enjoyed, but slow at times

I'm a big KA fan, so I was very eager to dive into this audio when it first came out. I enjoyed the story and was able to get invested into Gwen and Hicks story, both apart and together. The slow burn of their developing relationship at the beginning, reeled me, and I loved how it all came together. A great combination of romance, mystery and laughter, it made my commute to work and home much more enjoyable. I won't lie in saying that I may have taken a longer route every now and then.

The narrators did a great job, and I actually really enjoyed having the two narrators for the two different POV. I found it helped keep the flow better. And I absolutely loved listening to Lance Greenfield as Hicks. He was perfect.

While I mostly enjoyed the wonder of KA's story - and I'm not sure if this is because it's my first audio from KA, but I found the details in this book slightly exhausting. It didn't occur all the time, however there were times when I felt the explanation of certain tedious things rather wasteful. The urge to 'skip' for thirty seconds was rather tempting once in a while, but once the story moved along, it was great.
