Publisher's Summary

Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump is a fascinating on-the-ground and behind-the-scenes survey of Donald Trump's ethics deficit on and off the golf course.

Renowned sports writer Rick Reilly transports listeners onto the greens with President Trump, revealing the absurd ways in which he lies about his feats and what they can tell us about the way he leads off the course in the most important job in the world.

Reilly has been with Trump on the fairways, on the greens and in the rough; he has seen how the President plays - and it's not pretty. Based on his personal experiences and interviews with dozens of golf pros, amateurs, developers, partners, opponents and even caddies who have firsthand involvement with Trump out on the course, Reilly takes a deep and often hilarious look at how Trump shamelessly cheats at golf, lies about it, sues over it, bullies with it and profits from it.

From Trump's ridiculous claim to have won 18 club championships, to his devious cheating tricks, to his tainted reputation as a golf course tycoon, Commander in Cheat tells you everything you need to know about the man.

Story about a broke old obese crazy person

This book would be very funny if the stakes wouldn't be so high. We have this insane old narcissistic conman with his finger on the nuclear trigger and a whole part of the establishment pretending not to notice. It really is Berlin 1932 all over again.
Thanks to Rick for giving us yet another heads up...

An important book, brilliantly narrated.

Narrated by the author. I believe this is Rick Reilly's first narration and he does a great job, bringing out the humour & the irony - but also communicating a barely-controlled rage (rightly so) in the really outrageous, horrifying sections. This is very refreshing, he really speaks from the heart - and his tag-on 'thank you' section at the end is quite moving.
Regarding the story: there are many laugh-out-loud/slap your forehead in disbelief moments in the first half or so. But then it gets progressively darker and more sinister as Trump's golf escapades both as a 'player' and as a businessman leech into real world situations: politics, foreign policy, humanitarian crises, personal relationships, ecology... I wasn't surprised by most of the antics described - I've followed Trump's career as a hardened liar and cheat quite closely - but there were still a few sections where I had steam coming out of my ears.
This book is a great historical document.
Such a shame that the world is stuck with a narcissistic, manipulative, cold-hearted, lying, cheating, self-serving POTUS for the forseeable future. I'm scared, how about you?

Revealing but repetitive

This book reveals some interesting aspects of Trump's behaviour but never really explains why individuals and institutions put up with it; especially the US Golf Association

At 7 hours is probably 3 hours too long and the same examples are repeated in different chapters.

Fantastic story.

You would almost think that Rick Reilly is the greatest fiction writer in history if I didn’t sincerely believe what he tells us true. Parts of the book made me so angry that our game could be so disrespected. Sure it is only a game, but what is the point of a game unless you want to play it. Kind of glad he only plays on his own courses.

Fantastic narration, you can really hear Rick’s passion for his story when he narrates.

Fascinating, entertaining book about Trump & the world of golf

Loved this book even though I don’t play golf. Particularly liked listening to Rick reading the book - an added dimension with his American accent. Vast amounts of detail and humour in the anecdotes about golf, Trump and reminders that there are such things as decent behaviour and decent people as long as you don’t look to Trump as your model.

The most entertaining audiobook I've heard in ages

This audiobook was fantastic. The style of writing, and the excellent narrator do it so much justice. I knew Trump was a cheat at everything in life, but I never knew he was this bad. The correlation between golf and him as a president is funny and terrifying! I didn't think I liked golf, but Reilly may have changed my mind. His book is full of well researched facts and he writes with passion. Absolutely 5 stars.

Mind-blowing! "I never knew that!"

To me, this book was all about the subject matter. Performance/narration was easy to listen to. Should be compulsory reading for Trump supporters. If you cheat at golf, you'll cheat at anything. Hard to believe that one man can be such a lying, corrupt, bullying narcissist, and 1. Not have a conscience, and 2. Get away with it for so long, and 3. Likely to get a second term! (I fear for America)

Devastating account of Trump’s lack of integrity.

An amazing piece of journalism. Entertaining, horrifying and motivating. Extremely well written and equally well read. Thankyou.

Much better than expected

Really enjoyed this book. The author and narrator is very entertaining. His passion for golf is clear, but it is not a book about golf. It is a real insight into Trump's character from a man who very clearly knows him well. Easy to listen to and hilarious in many parts, the book gets better as it goes along.

A real surprise and one of my favourite books on Trump.

scary

it's scary how much content you have on this man and scarier that he is in a position of such power. We all know someone who is a questionable individual and to whom nothing seems to stick. This one happens to be POTUS

entertaining, illuminating and horrifying

This is a terrific book read by the author, who is clearly passionate about golf and how the President's broader behaviour is reflected in the broader world. Wonderful listening! The best ever!

Insightful

From someone who has not a gram of interest in golf (the ruination of a good walk ), please don't let the title put you off. An individual is the sum of every choice they ever made, and this work draws parallels and insights on 45 that are plausible and hard to ignore, as it is all on very public record. Even I can see the connection. A great read for golf-haters as well as golf-lovers!

Surprising

I did not expect a lot with this book. I was mainly curious after Lawrence O’Donnell mentioned it on his news program, “The Last Word” on MSNBC and wanted to know why the fuss about it. It is not a profound critical analysis of a very questionable individual, but a cheeky way to reveal a true tendency of a man absorbed with himself. If you are not yet fed up with Trump, this book can be somewhat entertaining, yet, in the end, it is the opposite of funny.
