Critic Reviews

"I have been a close friend of Tom Papa for 17 years. His lack of ability to perceive even the most basic principles of human functioning have made him an invaluable asset to me as a friend and colleague.... I would definitely recommend whatever the name of this book is, because I know it comes from a place of pure nonsense without any knowledge of anything. He is really one of my favorite people." (Jerry Seinfeld, comedian and author of SeinLanguage)

"Finally a funny book about parenting. Great observations. Great writing. Actually funny. I've always known Tom was hysterical, now I know he is a great writer and a fantastic storyteller. Can Tom Papa write all books?" (Jim Gaffigan, comedian and author of Dad Is Fat)

Great For New Fans

To begin, Tom is one of our favorite comedians and we have seen all his specials. That being said, if you have seen his specials this book might be a bit redundant. Much of it is taken from his on stage act and so you are hearing many of the stories/bits he did there.
His new stories are funny and clever and think this is a great first effort for a very talented guy!

Listened to it twice

After listening to Tom on Joe Rogan’s podcast (of which I have to use earbuds) I decided to give this book a go. I’ve been rather low in mood as of late and this had me laughing aloud repeatedly. I was also able to listen to it in front of my 7 & 14 year old while cooking. Mr.Papa is a charming and “normal” type personality that had tears rolling down my cheeks from laughter. I loved it and even listened to it a second time so I made sure I caught all of his jokes. Many thanks to the author. As an aside, I listen to a lot of books and podcasts every month and this stands out among supposed “all stars”.

Pleasantly Surprised

I thought this book would just be silly and funny but what I got was a very rich and deep insightful look into human relationships delivered in a funny way. I was pleasantly surprised. Was only looking for some laughs but got so much more. Made me laugh smile and even cry. Just beautifully done. Will be waiting for another book by him. I hope he does decide to write one. I know my words are not doing justice to how wonderful this book really was.

Come to Papa

Such a funny book. Easy to listen, makes a funny premise even funnier. I’ve loved Tom Papa for quite awhile and I was very glad to purchase.

Humor in the details

Tom Papa brings to light all of the small, trivial, hilarious details of family life. Perfect for parents or anyone who has been on a family vacation.

Tom Papa is wonderful!

This is my first time submitting a review. There are many other books I love, but they get plenty of reviews w/o me. For "Your Dad Stole My Rake" I had to speak up.

First, I love that Tom Papa read his own book. My husband and I always look forward to hearing his "out in America " segment on NPR on the weekends. We haven't finished this entire book yet. We decided to listen together and we have to pick time when it works for both of us. This book is a must if you have kids, young or grown up. It's a must if you were ever a kid, so that covers everyone! We laughed so much and I had a couple moments I was in tears. He is heartfelt, honest, and genuinely funny. It works best that, since I'm used to hearing his voice, he narrates his own writing. It would have been strange for me to hear his work coming from another voice. Get this book, audio version a must!

funny, yet reflective of papa life, and ones own.

As a fan of Tom Papa, I was excited to learn about this book. In a way, its like hours of a comedy routine. Tom papa does an excellent narration. On a deeper level, his story is sure to connect to many families, and make you reflect on your own parents, siblings and life.

Just didn't do it for me

Sorry, but I have to go against the masses on this one. I really wanted to like this book, life observations are my favorite sort of comedy, partly because it's so easy to relate to. But after listening for several hours I just didn't find the material funny. At all. It just felt like the scripts from his stand-up acts, which can certainly be funny, but after a while it just felt like this never-ending, monotonous stand-up bit. If you're going to write a book, and self-narrate it, then tell some real stories, don't just write down you stand-up bits. Some of the material just felt tired, re-worded versions of routines we've all heard before. I appreciate how hard comedy writing is, and even harder to deliver well, and I really do think Tom is a talented comedian. But I feel like he owed his book audience more than just his stand-up schtick. Comedians see the world in really interesting ways, I guess I was hoping he put more into this book.

Excellent Story Teller

I loved this book. Tom Papa is an excellent story teller and writer, he is funny, thoghtful and knows how to keep you engaged in the stories he is sharing with you. I will definitely read or listen to any other books he writes.
