Publisher's Summary

Alison Rosen, host of the immensely popular podcast Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend, is ready to conquer the world of books in this collection of hilarious and unpredictable columns.

Alison wants to be living a fabulous life filled with myriad social engagements. She just also wants to not shower, put on a bra, or leave the house. Plus, she dislikes dancing, the Fourth of July, and costume parties that involve skimpy attire. Basically, if it’s fun, count her out, which is too bad, since she so desperately wants you to think she’s fun.

Tropical Attire Encouraged came to be on her birthday a few years ago, when her husband, Daniel Quantz, presented her with a hand-bound book of her columns from the first year she was syndicated. He worked late at his office to keep it a surprise. At the top of each one, he included a hand-drawn illustration. Daniel told her he made it because he wanted her to know he believed in her and felt she should be published in book form, and because one year, she gave him an over-the-cabinet-door organizer, and he wanted her to really know - like, on a visceral level - just how crappy her gift was in comparison. (He didn’t say this, but it was implied.)

Great reading of Alison's new book!

Allison read her collection of essays very well her additional asides were just the icing on the cake. I did enjoy her interview with her husband Daniel at the end it added the candle to the cake thank you Allison!

Alison Rosen nailed her first book!

Would you listen to Tropical Attire Encouraged (and Other Phrases That Scare Me) again? Why?

Yes, I would listen to this book again. Alison has the ability to take the reader (or listener) on a journey and I love it.

What does Alison Rosen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Alison narrates the book. After each passage she gives you little asides you wouldn't get in the print version. She even describes each illustration for listeners of the audiobook.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! I got bummed out when I had to take breaks for work.

Any additional comments?

Alison Rosen is a fantastic writer and I need to know that book #2 will happen.

Poor production

Heard the author interviewed recently & decided to find & purchase the book. Might be better in printed format. It drove me CRAZY to hear her describe EACH ILLUSTRATION in the book. (We audio listeners are, by nature, ok with not seeing the pictures!). Her husband illustrated the book so I understand her desire to “include” his work in he audio version but it was maddening. Gave up listening about 1/2 way through. Also RE: production - author is the speaker - audio errors are included, kept, & apologized for, including misstatements, repeating some sentences, coughing & clearing her throat. Editing would have erased all these blemishes. Loved her interview but can’t stand the audio book.

New Best Friend Available

Alison Rosen is one funny mother…by which I mean she’s funny and recently had a kid. I first came across Alison when she was the news sidekick for the appalling Adam Carolla. To a toxic soup of machismo, misogyny and intolerance she was a comedic voice of reason. Her demeanor was that of the smart, fun grammar school senior who had inadvertently strayed into a frat house mid kegger. As much as I loathe Bald Bryan and Carolla…I really liked Alison. She was fired from the show of course…..I suspect for making Adam look the oaf he is one time too many.

I’ve followed her on her highly rated Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend show ever since. In addition to podcasting she’s also a magazine writer and this book is essentially a collection of her articles from various publications. The writing is pithy and funny quite a lot of the time. It’s not typically LOL funny but it did garner a couple of near spit takes. The audio book is more than just her reading from her articles. She discusses each piece, giving context and color which makes the whole experience much more conversational and probably about 30% longer than a straight reading would have been. That’s really my only criticism…this book is on the brief side but very much worth the credit

She tells well written stories from her life and although they often include ‘chick lit’ themes this is by far not a girly book. If you are already a fan you will love this book. If you aren’t I can heartily recommend you give her a try. All of us could use a new best friend.
