Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity.
While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants. Not to say he hasn't rubbed elbows with fame. He's crashed its party, snorted its coke, and jumped into its pool naked, literally and often repeatedly - all while artfully dodging fame himself.
Doug spares no legally permissible detail, and his stories couldn't be told any other way. They're weird, uncomfortable, gross, disturbing, and fucking funny.
This Is Not Fame is by no means a story of overcoming a life of excess, immorality, and reckless buffoonery. It's an outright celebration of it. For Stanhope, the party goes on.

When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. Great Job!
Chad shank is the best, his voice is pure mana from heaven. He does a female voice, loud shouting, and sales person inflection with ease. I really enjoyed this book thanks to him, and I know yoy will too.

Durn Good, Doug. Durn Good.
Way better than I woulda thunk. The sidebar commentary and dialog bits are for the most part, really great. If you are a fan of Stanhope, this is a must.

If you are a fan of his stand up then this is a must. Extremely well written and executed. Pour yourself a cocktail, sit back, and enjoy. Cheers my fellow termites

Stanhope is one of the authentic few left standing
Trust the awesomeness, just get it ! Bukowski and William S Burroughs had a baby and named it Doug Stanhope.

Doug stanhope a wordsmith, what a guy!
so if you know who Doug Stanhope is you're going to love this book if you don't know who he is you better be cautious going into this it is not for the weak hearted or the new to Stanhope.
I mean it might be just cuz you don't know Stanhope doesn't mean you're not into gross extreme very violent very cursive kind of Comedy. as it happens I am, I thought the book was a masterpiece a work of art in fact he made me cry about a 29 year old thanks Doug.
