Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Humor and Short Stories/Collections, 2005

"In his latest collection, Sedaris has found his heart. This is not to suggest that the author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and other best-selling books has lost his edge. The 27 essays here include his best and funniest writing yet....What emerges is the deepest kind of humor, the human comedy." (Publishers Weekly)
"Sedaris is a careful writer, with a no-muss, no-fuss style that rarely misfires." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Sedaris' piquant essays are as meticulously honed and precisely timed as the best stand-up comic routines, which is, of course, what they are....Sedaris, openly gay, nervy as a tightrope walker, sharply hilarious, teasingly misanthropic yet genuinely compassionate, has a unique ability to supply exactly the right details to bring every funny, awkward, ludicrous, painful, horrible real-life moment into harrowingly crisp focus....He is mesmerizing." (Booklist)
"Sedaris has a satirical brazenness that holds up next to Mark Twain and Nathanael West." (The New Yorker)

An Excellent Example of the Author's Work

David Sedaris does it yet again with this collection of essays and diary entries. Heartwarming, funny, snarky, sarcastic, and loveable to the core are some of the best descriptors I can think of for Mr. Sedaris, and I can't wait to collect all of his work here on Audible!

Glad this isn't my first Sedaris book

I have read 2 of this author's books and thought they were just great. This book, although well written, is so poignant that I am left feeling sad after each chapter, almost uncomfortably so. As one reviewer noted, it's extremely personal and offers great insight into how Mr. Sedaris became who he is. He writes, as always, with painfully unflinching honesty, sparing neither himself nor anyone else. As I listen to this book I can't help but wonder if it was written during a down period of his life. I'm not finished yet, but truthfully I can't wait until I am. I'm such a fan that I feel I owe him that.

Wonderful!

This was my first experience with David Sedaris, and it was so enjoyable that I took a break from every other normal daily activity until it was done! I hope his other books are as hilarious and thoughtful because I will be ordering them right now.

Hysterical

I thought it was just my mother that locked her children out of the house! Lots of great stories only a person form a big family could tell.

David Sedaris is always amusing

What made the experience of listening to Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim the most enjoyable?

I think the thing that made it the most enjoyable was that David read the book. There's something extra that comes through when a writer is the one reading his own material. Especially Sedaris, who is used to reading/speaking in front of crowds.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I would pick David's younger brother. I think he was the best because of the huge chasm there is between he and David personality wise

Which scene was your favorite?

David's sleep over when the other neighborhood boys

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

no

Any additional comments?

If you like David Sedaris, get this. If you like lighthearted but smart story telling, get this.

Laugh out Loud!

Families are funny. David Sedaris lays his life open the good the bad the funny the things that really shouldn't be funny but sadly are.bwhat makes so much of this funny to me at least and probably to others who laugh at this type of humor is that I can relate to so many of the family stories and the sayings... How far over to the wild side he takes the truth I'm not sure. But he certainly has a way of telling things that just about everything becomes funny. Between the wacky tales of his life and his families and hearing it read, which really then becomes having it TOLD to you because David Sedaris is the narrator.
And he has the most unique voice and speech pattern that is the perfect combination. I loved this from start to finish and there were many laugh out loud moments. I didn't want this audio book to end.-

A Great Listen

This is my first Sedaris book. This is one of the funniest works I have listened to on Audible; even funnier than Al Franken. It is thoughtful and quick witted. I must agree that the live audience chapters are the best. I recommend this book without reservation.
