Publisher's Summary

[Contains explicit content]

Be warned - this raw, unpolished adventure across the States contains alligator wrestling, leather chaps and Vegas weddings. As a multi-award winning comedian and travel journalist, Dom Joly's take on any destination is always witty, sharp, hilarious and irreverent - even more so when that destination is the backwaters of the USA.

Join Dom on a three-week odyssey across the USA as he explores the weird and wonderful oddities of American culture with his trusty sidekick (and complete stranger) Fiona. With the same level of widescreen storytelling you'd expect from a television documentary, Big American Vacation sees Joly rove across the continent in his Chrysler 'Enormoburger', investigating coffin races at the 'Cryonics Mardi Gras', drive-through weddings and late-night emergency Elvises, competitive turkey bowling, marijuana sommeliers and dude ranches.

Fun !

I like listening to Dom’s voice. He has an interesting story to tell as he goes to several places in the US as a sort of road trip, and gets into a few tight spots along the way. I like travel books mixed with humor, so this fit the ticket. Wish it would have been longer. Maybe he can make a road trip #2 sometime.

terrible audio quality - total profiteering, awful

I normally enjoy Dom Jolly's travel books, but this is not a book or even a travel journal. Its a very very poorly recorded series of travel 'larks' between Dom and some giggling unfortunate from Amazon that sounds like it's been recorded on a very poor quality mobile phone.

If you can imagine a 20 minute out on the road radio show that has not been planned, produced or edited this is what you have. It really is like someone replaying something they recorded themselves, that they find really funny, which you cant really hear or understand. Oh you had to be there - it was so funny.

There is a horrendous 'announcer' who keeps interjecting at the start and throughout telling you what hilarious things are coming up. The screeching very annoying American woman's voice is at a volume that will blow your ear drums as you have had to turn the volume up to hear what Dom is mumbling on about. Dom has a side-kick, some girl from Amazon who you can barely hear as she obviously isn't mic'd up, who he tries to engage in conversation which is mostly just childish giggling - she must be in so much awe of him.

A truly dreadful listen. Only 3 hours long (thank God), Dom you can do so much better than this and Amazon should be ashamed of the blatant profiteering. Not worth 10p - will be returning for refund.

Love Dom but this is dross

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would change buying it. I would also give everyone who's speaks in here a microphone

Would you be willing to try another book from Dom Joly? Why or why not?

Had the other three already love them will get the next.

What didn’t you like about Dom Joly’s performance?

Nice voice but he is loud and the only one with a microphone so you can't hear the other people properly.

Was Dom Joly's Big American Vacation worth the listening time?

No

Any additional comments?

Dom Jolys other books are brilliant in them he makes no secret that he loves travelling and loves to try to get others to pick up the bill for hi, doing very little work. Guess what Audible you have been punked

Hugely disappointing and completely unfunny.

This is a huge disappointment after the highly amusing "Dark Tourist" where we all laughed out loud. It is an Audible original but the production values and sound quality are appalling. The producer Fiona can barely be heard and there is an annoying American continuity woman making crass and unfunny links. We bought this for a family car journey and had to stop it by public outcry. A total waste of money and a poor ad for Audible.

Lose the annoying narrator

What would have made Dom Joly's Big American Vacation better?

Lose the annoying narrator, literally every 5 mins she chirps in like an american ad telling you whats coming next. I tried, but after 40 mins, could take no more. Disappointing.

What will your next listen be?

Dan Browns new pre order book.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Dom Joly?

It wasn't Dom. It was some annoying american lady.

What character would you cut from Dom Joly's Big American Vacation?

Need i say. . .

Dreadful waste

Purchased purely on Dom's previous works. Big mistake.
Someone is trying to cash in....don't let them.

Not Dom Joly's best work

I've listened to all Dom Joly's audio books and loved them all. Dom was good in this one again but the sound quality of other people wasn't great and the announcer just terrible.

The announcer interrupts every 5 mins to tell you what is happening is incredibly annoying and is more suited to a reality TV show where the audience has a 2 minute attention span.

Great

Very enjoyable! Felt like you were there. Some very funny scenes but equally some quite touching ones. I hope Dom and Fiona do more.

A really enjoyable travel documentary 5*

This isn’t a studio recording of Mr Joly reading a book, but 8 episodes of Dom’s American adventure - a fun travel documentary podcast, produced specifically for Audible.

A very enjoyable and entertaining listen, the only negative is the female narrator that introduces and links scenes; felt her voice jarred with the rest of the production.

Not sure how American’s will perceive it, as a few of the things Dom says are likely to upset them.

More adventures Dom (+ Fiona, his Producer/ sidekick), please more……..

Don't waste your time

What would have made Dom Joly’s Big American Vacation better?

The technical production quality was very poor
The american link narrator was very irritating

What was most disappointing about Dom Joly’s story?

Shoddy audio production

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Dom Joly?

Dom is fine, just do a professional job of the production next time.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed

Any additional comments?

I was very disappointed, I love all his other books. This just smacks of a half arsed approach.
