Publisher's Summary

Tess Johnson has it all: her handsome photographer husband Beau, a thriving business, and a newly discovered pregnancy. When Beau accepts an overseas photography assignment, Tess decides to wait to reveal her secret - only she's never given the chance. Beau's helicopter crashes in the desert. Tess struggles with the news of Beau's death and tries to put her life back together. Alone and dealing with a pregnancy that only reminds her of what she has lost, Tess is adrift in a world of failed plans and fallen expectations. When a new client appears offering more than just a new project, Tess must confront the circumstances of her life head on.

Meanwhile, two Iraqi women who are fleeing honor killings find Beau barely alive in the middle of the desert, his body ravaged by the crash. Suha, a doctor, and Samira, a widow and mother of three young children, nurse him back to health in a makeshift tent. Beau bonds with the women and children, and together, with the help of an underground organization, they continue their dangerous escape. What happens next is a test of loyalties, strength, and love.

Not so hot

I took a chance and lost on this one. Not particularly well written and really a chick lit title. The characters did not act like like they should have, so character development was always a puzzle--and not in a good way. These people were not especially likeable either. So you were always left unhappy and unfulfilled. Reminded me of that awful Jodi Oicoult book, My Sister's Keeper, in some ways. Contrived and uses every plot twist ever invented so that the story is ultimately unbelievable. However, I was in the minority with My Sister's Keeper so maybe you will like this one. I can't imagine why, but maybe you will. I did not. Narrator was wasted on this sub-par book.

Heartwrenching Goodness

As one of Melissa's older titles, this one did not disappoint either. Tess thinks she has lost her husband while he is gone on a photography expedition, but that is not the case at all, he was lost but as the title states he was making his way back to Tess. We get to witness the strength of women who are sheltered in their own country and the freedom they gain by coming to ours. This book also teaches a great deal about loss and the strength it takes to overcome loss and many emotions when everything isn't as it seems. A riveting story, that will make you cry a lot and tear your heart out. Beautifully written with many hard subjects faced each with their own twist of fate.
