Story
Hi there. I'm Hattie Morehead, and for a 19-year-old, I've screwed up my life pretty good, so far. I grew up in a town in Tennessee the size of a mud puddle, and I'd planned to be somewhere else, by now, doing something important. Instead, I got myself pregnant, dropped out of high school, and took a job at the same sewing factory that sucked the life out of my mother and my grandmother.

Ever dreamed of being a fly on the wall?
This book felt personalized for me: running stream of consciousness, secrets, humor, secrets, revelations, betrayals, connections, repercussions, secrets, set in my adopted home town...and did I mention secrets? ALL THE SECRETS!
I didn't turn it off until it was done.
Marigold is the quintessential middle child. Leaned on. Overlooked. Left to blossom on her own, her life is okay, but nothing spectacular on the surface. The man she loves is about to marry someone else. And then...she lands in the coma ward ("vegetable patch") of a hospital after a head-on collision that everybody else walked away from. I'm sure there was a good reason Ms. Bond chose "Brady" (Grady) hospital for her setting, but if you ever have brain trauma in Atlanta - go to Emory.
While in her coma, she sometimes sleeps, but often is aware. She hears everything going on around her and, for some reason, people begin to confide in her. She also learns secrets from the people who behave as if she's not even in the room. Juggling all this information is probably how she keeps from going batty while she's lying there, trapped in her own body. Not all the patients in her room handle the situation as well as she does.
There are a lot of shady characters in this book. Her family and an opportunistic ambulance chaser turn her into a media sensation. Her adorable, but gullible aunt brings around a con artist. Even her friend and roommate isn't always trustworthy.
And WHO is sending pictures of her to the Internet Tabloids?
The narrator, Maureen Jones, does the humor and intrigue great justice. Her southern accent is good, though I did occasionally detect some random Canadian. Her timing is spot on and I'll look for more of her work to enjoy.
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded a bit more righteous revenge, but maybe I'm a little meaner than Marigold.
Highly recommend.

Couldn't turn it off
I just finished this book and am sad to see it end. At times it was side splitting funny and immensely sad. I just couldn't get over what people will confess to if they think that the person can't hear/understand them. Then when the person 'wakes up' how terrified they are that their secrets will come out. It is a very long book but so worth every minute. The narrator was excellent at the different voices/people and very consistent throughout the book. She brought to life every character and made the book more enjoyable. I am glad that I waited until the series ended because I don't have the patience to follow a daily serial. I am going to definitely look into Stephanie Bond's other books.

Great Serial
It was great to have this daily serial in one complete audio book.
The characters are occasionally annoying, but a true reflection of families in reality.
Easy narration and you just want to keep listening to hear the next surprise ;)
