Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of Pretty Girls Dancing comes a shattering serial-killer thriller about revenge, deliverance, and survival.

Cady Maddix survived a brutal upbringing - emotionally scarred but hardened - with a will for self-preservation. Hunting fugitives has given her life purpose and control. But when the Deputy US Marshal returns home to care for her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother, a new case stirs old memories.

Child killer Samuel Aldeen has broken out of a nearby facility for the criminally insane, and the authorities believe he was aided by accomplices, both inside and out. Enlisted to track him down, Cady follows an unexpected lead. Her name is Eryn Pullman, a young woman recently released from a neighboring psychiatric facility, a mentally fragile survivor of childhood abuse, and Aldeen’s next designated victim.

To save Eryn’s life, Cady must work fast to uncover the unimaginable link between predator and prey - even as it pulls her into the cold dark places of her own past.

Well Done!!!!

I found this book very absorbing. This is a story of two very dysfunctional families and the secrets they have kept.
The publisher's summary is more than adequate and gives enough information. There are so many likable characters in this story and the few not very likable are enough to make this very taught and suspenseful. The main antagonist really has his head screwed on backwards. This is told from multiple points of view and then and now time frames. The progression in character development is great. The ending is a real treat and totally unexpected.

The narration by Christina Traister and Andrew Eiden is excellent. They worked really well together.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Modern detective thriller!

Author Kylie Brant has moved from her long history of writing romance novels to writing in the mystery/thriller genre. This is the first novel of hers I have read but it will not be the last. In COLD DARK PLACES protagonist and Deputy US Marshall Cady Maddix has real issues in her past including killing a man when she was a child. She is now an experienced law enforcement officer.

This is an outstanding novel with excellent narration.

Great book and awesome narration..

Let me tell you what I loved about this book. I loved that the chapters went from Cady the United States Marshall and her partner Miguel, to Ryder, the cop, to Eryn, the 21 year old girl that was just released from a mental institution a few weeks ago, for killing her mother when she was nine, and to Samuel Aldeen, the escaped killer. All these people’s thought and feelings and what they were talking about and looking into you got to read about. THAT’S what’s soooo good about 3rd person writing. I've also read 3 or 4 more of Kylie Brant's books and they've all been 5 star reads.

Plus, it was a very good murder mystery, a couple of murders by Aldeen and his partner David Sutton and the cops, USMS, DEA, and FBI hot on their trail. And it was a great ending, with everything tied up nicely.

There was no romance and the F-bomb was used 22 times.

As to the narration: Simply awesome! Christina Traister and Andrew Eiden both took turns and when it was time for a man or woman to speak they both sounded like they should. I’m always so pleased when I can listen to a book and the female narrator can do a man’s voice and the male can sound like a woman. So, YAY!

review

one person commented on the female readers voice. I had no issue and actually found her range fantastic and added something to the many female characters. great story and presentation will look for another book from author.

Just okay. Annoying female narrator

The story was okay. It may be that the female narrator was very annoying and hard to get past. She's over dramatic, over emphasizes and pronounces words while adding no excitement to the story. The male narrator was good so it's too bad the review reflects on him too.

Very complex

There are several threads to this story that you know have to weave together at some point but just aren't sure how. The complex tendrils to be solved goes quite a ways into the book before you start seeing how the puzzle pieces fit together. The narrators are good.

Could not get into it.

I tried 2 times to get into this book. But it just kept bouncing back and fourth between all these families! By chapter 9, I still couldn't keep it all straight nor did it explain the connections. I normally love Kylie's books, but I just couldn't keep up with this one. You almost need to write down who's connected with who to keep up.

Fun…well for murder.

I liked that there was no man saving the day or unnecessary romance. The lack of swearing did make it unrealistic considering how bad the bad guys are.

Just aweful

It was heard to get through half of the book. The change in narrators did not work for this audiobook. The male was just plain annoying and did not complement the female. This has a very weak and drawn out story line.
