Publisher's Summary

Do you suffer from frequent bouts of severe depression or anxiety? Do you feel that you are weak, needy, and/or incompetent? Are you seriously looking for a new direction on the road to recovery?

If you’re interested in understanding the ins and outs of behavior therapy, this is just the book to introduce you to some powerful methods for overcoming mental illness! Keep reading.

We all have an array of worries, fears, and frustrations in our everyday life. After all, it is natural to feel stressed about moving to a new place, beginning a new job, tackling endless to-do lists, or turning in projects with tight deadlines. Without a baseline level of stress, we might not be able to carry out our day-to-day responsibilities.

Nevertheless, dealing with a great deal of anxiety, emotional imbalance, and excessive stress can cause deeper issues that need to be treated with psychotherapy and, potentially, medication.

People are starting to open up more and more about the important topic of mental health. Many public figures have revealed their struggle with bipolar disorder, suicidal thoughts and related issues. These things no longer have to be kept as shameful secrets. Although many people have tried to destigmatize mental illness, it remains a stumbling block for those of us who are left to fight the illness, often alone, and without any means of support.

In this practical beginner's guide entitled Cognitive and Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Overcome Anxiety and Depression, Tackle Negative Thought Patterns, Control Your Emotions, and Change Your Mood Through Effective Psychotherapy, Elizabeth Broks offers detailed tactics with regard to living and coping with mental illness using two specific types of psychotherapy: cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

By the end of this book, you will discover:

  • Similarities and differences between CBT and DBT
  • How CBT can help you deal with and react positively to your thoughts
  • Ways in which DBT can retrain your brain to calm down when your emotions become too intense
  • Tips and tricks to assist you in discovering the right treatment for you
  • Mindfulness practices for relaxing and staying in the present moment
  • How CBT and DBT help in coping with mental health conditions including bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and borderline personality disorder
  • And much more!

Another “think positive” book

Do you work as a social worker and are a close witness with human depravity? Are you an animal activist in constant contact with cruelty imagery? Are you someone who is more worried with the fate of the world and society than being recognized as a good worker or having vacations? This is not the book for you. It may help simple minded people whose problems are centered on their ego. It contains tips you can find on any wellness blog nowadays. I thought I’d read a scientific lecture about the why’s and the how’s of the human mind. It is instead another piece of canned optimism.

A great and useful book for the average person.

You will be able to use this book with or without a therapist, but it is more useful with CBT. It is an excellent step by step audio book. Finally I know what CBT is and I can use it on my patients and on myself. Now I give myself more permission to turn negative experiences in my life into a positive power.

Helped me to overcome anxiety easily.

It's very easy to use for an individual or in a session with clients. I like that there are homework type questions at the end of each chapter and worksheets you can listen to use yourself. Author clearly and concisely presents strategies for dealing with anxiety, depression, anger, panic and worry.

Really enjoyed the narration, highly recommended.

Awesome book that actually covers CBT and all the implications that come with that, instead of going off into other topics, really enjoyed the narration also- highly recommended. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, covered absolutely everything I wanted to know about CBT.

If you want to get a fine introduction

I've listened and practiced CBT techniques outlined by guys like Ellis and Burns for years. This book has been added to my resources on this subject. He covers the gamut of CBT and, most importantly, adds new material from research that has been conducted since the originators of this very effective therapy. listened in a down to earth style so very layman-friendly. If you use CBT or want to get a fine introduction, and then some.

With good insight and motivational

Recommended by my therapist. For someone currently in therapy, with good insight and motivation, you can use these step-by-step well organized worksheets to supplement your individual therapy and goals. DBT is a subset of CBT. Though the four premises of DBT are meant to be mastered in succession.

Is especially good

You can be entirely self-motivated to go through the book, but it's best to have someone hold you accountable for practicing. I also bought the manual which describes skills in more depth with examples, which is especially good if you don't want to go through a DBT program.pragmatic for high emotionality

This is the worst book I have ever started reading

I will let these quotes from chapter 5 explain my review for me: "...it makes the youngsters miserable and they often have to through their lives pursuing their parents dreams. This case is especially true with Asian parents. For instance, think of a Korean mother who wants her daughter to grow up and play the violin well..." "The human brain is one of the most complicated things in the whole universe." If you think the author who wrote these might also have something to offer compared to alternatives, then go ahead...
