2018 Romantic Comedy Winner - American Fiction Awards

Clutch: A Novel is the laugh-out-loud chick lit romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags - the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc.

With her best friend, bar owner Mike, by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors, and finds the courage to discover someone onto whom she wants to hold: the “Clutch”.

Amusing Romance

Clutch is an amusing journey through, friendship, life, dating and handbags.
Caroline's Aunt Mimi inspired her love of all things handbag and encouraged her to chase her dream of making wonderful but affordable handbags. She encouraged her to go to Harvard in order to pursue her dream.
Probably my favourite character in this story is Mike, he is sweet, supportive, funny and he owns a bar so keeps our leading lady, Caroline topped up with wine as she stumbles from one disastrous man to another.
I found Caroline initially annoying, but her wittiness and intelligence had me really liking her after that initial irritation.
The plot was not one that we haven't seen before but the technique of chapters being named after bags that are associated with the men is unique and fun. I would class this as an enjoyable summer listen that will keep you amused but be warned about probable laughter. (if reading in a public place with headphones on)
Suzanne Barbetta didn't do a bad job with the vocal acting but she didn't blow me away. I found her to be consistent and clear in her voice acting and I think that on other books she could be outstanding but for me this wasn't a great match between book and narrator. That is the only criticism that I really have. For me it just wasn't the best pairing.

A Sweet & Delight Story!! Great Listen! 🎧

Lisa Becker skillfully created a sweet and delightful story. I love how she named each title after a handbag style and fittingly incorporates it in to each chapter’s storyline. The main characters are very likable, Caroline a handbag designer and her incorrigible best friend Mike. Aunt Mimi was riot too. This was a quick fun read, with a touch of heat and lots of LOL moments. Thank you for the great read!

I listened to the audible edition, Suzzane Barbetta performs all the voices, switches characters effortlessly and with out missing a beat. She brings the characters & story to life from the pages to your ears. Thank you for the great listen!

Thank you 🎧AudiobookObsession

Cute, Sassy, Fun!

Such a cute read chronicling the funny yet disastrous dating life of a handbag designer. It may also include a hot as sin best friend and some crazy situations, but you will never know unless you read it!

The narration was fun and quirky. I will definitely be looking up more books narrated by Suzanne Barbetta.

Delightful & Funny!

This book was so charming and funny! I imagine if i were in similar situations I would be just like her! I love that she has a best friend who is always there for her no matter what.
This story seems so realistic for me in so many ways, I really connected with both Caroline and Mike on so many levels! (Except the Harvard part lol) This is my first book by Lisa Becker but it definitely won’t be the last. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance comedies!!

Gloriously Entertaining!!

I absolutely loved listening to this book! It is about dating and finding the right one with a best friend to help through all the rough patches. It was certainly a laugh-out-loud story and you can't help but love Caroline while at the same time wanting to hug her, smack her on the back of the head and laugh along with her in her adventures. The narrator did an awesome job with the voices and emotions! Suzanne Barbetta really brings the story to life and I will look for what other stories she has narrated. If your looking for a really fun and light-hearted listen that will make those of us taken glad we are taken then this book is for you!! You won't regret giving this story a chance! LOVED IT!!

Cute Experience

For me this was a really cute experience! I truly enjoyed the author’s work and the narrator’s voice acting! The story had a few good twists that made it unpredictable which helped me get hooked! And the acting felt real to me 🙂 I give both of them 5/5 stars!

Enjoyable Contemporary Romance

I love Audiobooks - they allow me to 'read' whilst I'm working and It makes me feel less alone and as a freelancer working at home, this is a nice thing! I don't often go for romance stories but felt that my threshold for audiobooks is higher than if I was reading the book, and I was not wrong ... I really enjoyed this story!

I have to say the I think the end outcome is really predictable but it doesn't take any from the enjoyment of the story. I really liked that even though the romance and 'soulmate' searching was the focus of the story )not something I usually go for) but wasn't done in a way that made me feel nauseous - as a single 39 year old (who is quite happy being single thank you very much) I do sometimes find the 'desperate' search for love sickeningly over the top but not this time. It was a great mix of funny, embarrassing, outrageous and scary stories and I wanted to be part of Caroline's life, and totally fell in love with Mike too!

I also have to talk about Suzanne, the narrator too - she is a new favourite! Her different voices and accents were great and her storytelling background really shone through - she was gripping and exciting and I will definitely seek out other audiobooks she has done in the future.

The audiobook itself is an easy listen - I actually listened to it in 2 chunks over 2 days and really enjoyed my time with Caroline and give it 4 Stars. I was given a free copy of this audiobook in return for an honest review.

Funny, full of adventure and inspiring

Funny, full of adventure and even inspiring – that’s how I would describe “Clutch”. And why is that? Because our main character goes through embarrassing moments, has witty lines that put a smile on your face and all her poor choices in men are a bit funny too. Even if making fun of someone else’s misfortune is not very polite, let’s make an exception, ok ?

Caroline Johnson had the courage to pursue a career in what she loved most, designing and making clutches and other kind of bags that women could easily afford. She had the ambition to create her own brand, her own line of accessories, following her aunt’s advice to find what she loves and hang on to that. However, her good eye for business does not apply when it comes to her love life. With a steady income that allows her a more than decent lifestyle, she is now trying to find the right man for her. She goes out with these guys but none of them feels like the right one. We see her with men as different as bags, one better (or worse) than the other. It will be a true adventure, with a lot of smiles.

It is easily observed that Caroline has two constants in her life: her job and her best friend Mike. He is always there for her, supporting every decision and encouraging her. But he has his own adventures with women. We see them both dating, but while one is looking for something steady, the other is just “sampling” J

I loved the narration! Suzanne Barbetta has such a beautiful accent and her voice is perfect for the character! She is absolutely fantastic! I would not have imagined a better interpretation J

To close my review, even if Caroline’s personality is a bit conflicting, this makes her human, this makes her genuine in a way. I was mentioning that this book may even be inspiring. Well, for me, it was. There are some words of wisdom added between the pages and I will keep them in mind. 4.5 stars and I gladly recommend it for a fun relaxing read! Enjoy J

Wanted More

This book is chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc. With her best friend, bar owner Mike by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of Chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors and finds the courage to discover the “Clutch” or someone she wants to hold onto.

I really wanted to love this book. It was nice but I felt like I wanted more. More details in some areas, more funny, just more. I want to try this author again but with something different. Suzanne Barbetta did an great job with the narrating. I encourage you to read it for yourself and see what you think.

Spectacularly hysterical romantic comedy!

I absolutely adored this audio book.

It is, quite literally, an account of the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson. Poor girl! She is a delightful self-made business woman with a handbag designing company. However between her beauty, blonde hair and southern demeanour, she is often mistaken for a bit of a bimbo and an easy target. Thank goodness for her best friend and bar owner, Mike. He keeps her chardonnay glass topped up and regularly provides his shoulder for her to cry on.

There is something about that adage regarding kissing a whole lot of frogs before you find your prince. Love is sometimes where you least expect it..... if only Caroline would open her eyes, she might have avoided the frogs. But where is the fun in that?!!

Lisa Becker has written a fabulously entertaining contemporary romance and Suzanne Barbetta has brought the story to life. Her narration really captures the subtle nuances of the various characters' personalities and reflects the intricacies of the relationships between the characters.

Overall a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining listening experience!
