Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of Watch Your Back and Did You Miss Me comes the newest novel by "the queen of romantic suspense" (Crime and Punishment).

Psychologist Faith Corcoran is desperate to escape the stalker who's made her life a nightmare for the past year--desperate enough to run to the one place that has been her nightmare for far longer. Both boon and bane, her recent inheritance of her grandmother's old house in Cincinnati offers a sanctuary in which she can start her life anew but requires that she face dark memories that resonate to this day.

She has no idea, however, just how close to home her fears still are...

Two college girls have gone missing in the area, and FBI special agent Deacon Novak is called to work on the case. When his inquiry unexpectedly leads him to Faith, he finds a beautiful and brave woman for whom he can't help but fall. Soon they'll discover that this seemingly simple investigation is anything but. Reaching back decades into Faith's own past, it will shatter everything she believes to be true and will give terrifying new meaning to flesh and blood.

hard to stop listening

Would you listen to Closer Than You Think again? Why?

Yes, will listen to it again. I love loooong books. This was a perfect long listen adventure. Never really figured it out. Kept me listening and loved the narrator Hillary Huber. So much easier than Margarite. Every voice was distinct and her voice did not quaver. Nice on the ears. Thank you Hillary!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Closer Than You Think?

Memories of the basement. I lived in a house with a creepy basement. The backs of the steps were open and I always ran up them so that no one could grab my ankles. There was never anyone there but it always felt like someone was going to grab.

Which scene was your favorite?

I can't say it would spoil some of the ending.

Any additional comments?

If you don't like long books then don't get this one. Don't give negative reviews on the length it clearly stated TWENTY EIGHT HOURS! LOVE IT! To me this was a bargain, good story, good voice to read to me, and I didn't guess the end. I loved every minute of it.

Intriguing

there are multiple subplots that will keep you intrigued. there's so much action you may find yourself talking out loud to the characters!
2 things I didn't like was 1/2 way through when the main characters are in the lobby of a hotel and while everything else is happening (shooting) they are imagining being WITH each other. Also, the second part of the book when the the female lead keeps crying and blaming herself... every 5 minutes. Overall it's a really good book and worth it.

Good, but too long.

I loved this book, but I have to agree with other reviewers, that it is unnecessarily long and that certain scenes don't make sense, like the the timing of the sex scenes. I also think that the time span was too short for the romance. a few weeks or months maybe, but not three day. overall it was a good read and kept me fascinated until the end.

I LOVED THIS STORY! This is one that I'd be able to listen to again and again. Of course, I'm also partial to this author.

Formulaic Fodder

Enter the tortured but beautiful heroine who falls madly into lust with an equally handsome and horny hero. Add hot sex scenes to break the monotony of a predictable story of mayhem against women and you have this book. The saving grace was Hillary Hubert, the narrator. Books by Karen Rose are off of my list.

This will be the only Karen Rose book I "read"

I would have given this one star but I did finish it because the plot pulled me through wanted to know "who done it". But the love interest subplot, that some mystery writers apparently consider necessary, was just awful. And there was so much of it! Trust me, as a child of the 60s I am no prude but it was couple was unbelievable and not one bit sexy. Just boring. Most of the story takes place over the course of 2-3 days. The protagonists meet early on day one and by the end of day two they are considering spending the rest of their lives together. I could buy "love at first sight" story if the author had been able to create some electricity between the two, but she did not. I ended up just skipped those scenes which is annoying in a mystery as you are afraid you'll miss a clue. Many years ago I was in NYC on business and eating dinner alone in a fancy restaurant. Unbeknownst to me, a romance writers conference was in town and 6-8 of them sat at the next table. They were dissing romance writers who were not there, drinking and laughing at poorly written sex scenes including such characters as "Flaming Tina". This book would have made their list. If you want a romance you might like this. P.S. This is the worst review I've ever given a book. If I don't like it I usually don't finish it and think its unfair to rate the book. This one drove me so crazy I needed to tell someone!

Torture!

Any additional comments?

Oh my gosh - This was probably the most awful listening experience ever. I stuck it out just to find out who dunnit. Torture!!!!! The most awful uninteresting dragging plot ever. I don't think I will listen to/read another Karen Rose story and I will not ever listen to Hillary Huber again. The worst part of the story was the romantic subplot. So unnecessary. If you've got a good story, you don't need that. The two main characters got to a ridiculous level of intimacy within hours of meeting each other. It's insulting as a reader/listener to thnk that we need that. Mystery/suspense is my favorite genre and this experience will not turn me off it. It has turned me away from Karen Rose and Hillary Huber's sleepy, disinterested voice. Sorry!

Complex and Intriguing Book

A mental health therapist, Dr. Faith Frye, had gotten a reputation, unwarranted, as a sexual predator therapist in Miami. She was actually using court ordered therapy for a family as a reason to provide therapy to victims of incest. The victims often wouldn't get help any other way! Of course, she knew the offenders or women who covered for them were incapable of being cured, but she was unfairly judged as supportive of people who commit sex crimes. Now, for the past year, Faith has been stalked and almost murdered six times. She has reported these problems to the police thirty times and for various reasons had not really been believed or helped. Faith decides to change her name and move to Cincinnati where she inherited a house.

This is a love story, a story of two families, and a search for a serial killer! When Faith finds a naked teenage girl on the road her second day in Cincinnati, she calls police and protects the girl until they show up. A tall, muscular man with prematurely white hair, black leather coat and wrap-around sunglasses 😎 covering the most beautiful and unusual color eyes, introduces himself as FBI Special Agent Deacon Novak and she is entranced.

Besides a love story, "Closer Than You Think" touches on kidnapping, torture, sex abuse, murder, suicide, embalming, good cops, bad cops, slavery, teenage angst, stalking, and lots of secrets. Which, IMHO was just a bit too much for one book. That is why I gave a 4 star rating rather than five. Still a very good book and highly recommend for lovers of romantic suspense.

Strong religious beliefs lead to a lifetime of lies, grief, and hate! The writing is superb; the story-line has everything you could ask for to keep you engrossed! I couldn't be happier to find another, new favorite author, Karen Rose!

Hillary Huber was outstanding with the delivery of the story.
