Publisher's summary

"A thrilling journey inwards as much as outwards.... A must-read." (Freida Pinto)

"How fortunate a thing it is, when life alters you without warning."

Lisa Ray is one of India's first supermodels. She's also an actor, a cancer survivor, a mother of twins through surrogacy. She is a woman who has lived many lives. And this is her story.

Close to the Bone is an unflinching, deeply moving account of Lisa Ray's life, tracing her childhood in Canada as the biracial daughter of an Indian man and a Polish woman, her rise as a popular Bollywood star and her battle with a rare, incurable cancer. Transporting and atmospheric, it takes listeners across the world, from Toronto in the 1970s, when Lisa was desperately trying to find place and purpose, to the intense, frenetic streets of Bombay, where, unmoored and lost, she began her film career; from the hot and sweaty sensuality of Colombo, a place where she finally began finding acceptance, to the romance of Holland Park in London.

At once funny, charming and gut-wrenchingly honest, Close to the Bone is Lisa Ray's brave and inspiring story of a life lived on her own terms.

A Work Of Art

I believe writing can be art.
Lisa writes a book that is open, honest, sincere and real about a life that is unlike others. It’s not just her interesting life story but it’s a beautifully written book; it’s a book written by a writer who enjoys writing. It’s filled with words that flow and surround you like the water of a soft flowing river when it engulfs an object sticking out the water. You become all encompassed with the images and thoughts she’s written to beautifully surround you. Each dog-eared page contains something that struck me whether emotionally, mentally, or even physically bringing me to tears. Some of it is just simply beautiful imagery. Some of it felt as though it came from my own life. And some of it, reminds me to look deeper into myself as to why it resonates so strongly with me.
I had the audible audiobook but after listening to the first 9 or so chapters I knew I needed the book. I wanted to underline words and phrases and I wanted to truly immerse myself in the words I was hearing because this book is that good; I cried as I finished those last words. I sincerely recommend grabbing this book. It’s on Amazon and Audible.

More beautiful for having been broken ©

More beautiful for having been broken ©
Have you ever had the feeling of plunging into the life described in the book? Have you ever felt the warm hand of the Author leading you through pages and even words? Have you ever experienced grief with a smile on your face?
That is not a simple biography, it is more complicated and deep, a memoir, a travelogue, an adventurous story…
I like reading with a pencil in my hand, in Close to the Bone there is so much to underline , to think over, to digest, to perceive …
One more thing that should be noted is the use of words, there is a great palette and variety of them that support the images portrayed.
Additionally, what catches the attention is the division of logically complete parts within the chapters by means of adding the capitals of countries and their slight description enabling the flow of the new part.
I must admit it is a very honest book, open-hearted and very-Lisa Ray-like-book, when reading it you have the feeling of presence of the author and you can even imagine her smile or laugh or give a ‘seriously?’ look …
This book is really influential, it makes you think and most importantly act, pay attention to your real wishes and understanding of yourself, do yoga, get rid of some bad habits, decide what’s important and who’s important, realise your fears, even adjust your diet to your pace of life, it teaches you to cherish moments and value life, people, opportunities…
Thank you!

What a treat!

I knew Lisa as the actress, so when I purchased this audible version of Close to the Bone, I did not have a lot of expectations. I expected someone narrating her life experiences, just casually talking to me. But just a few minutes into it, I realized I was in for a literary treat! I am amazed by her eloquence. Every sequence was very articulate, tender moments were passionate and the fun stories were very vivid. The book also being sort of a travelogue made me enjoy it more, as a traveler myself. I must say, I appreciate Lisa more as a person because of this book. Now, where to get the hard copy here in the Philippines...

If you’re searching for something, it’s close to the bone. Read it.

What can someone say about resilience and a beautiful story of a busy life. Lisa is an inspiring model of what life is. A road of turns and turnarounds and exits toward fate and destiny. Her view on manifestation is something that I share and am encouraged by. I’ve read this twice now and each time there’s something I notice that I hadn’t before. To me, that is a marker of an impactful read.

Appreciate your gift, absolutely will be buying every book you decide to put out into the universe. Love, wellness and pure happiness to you.
