Some lives can be summed up in a sentence or two. Other lives are epics. In Clockwork Angels, number-one best-selling author Kevin J. Anderson and legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart created a fabulous, adventurous steampunk world in a novel to accompany the smash Rush concept album of the same name.

It was a world of airships and alchemy; clockwork carnivals; pirates; lost cities; a rigid Watchmaker who controlled every aspect of life; and his nemesis, the ruthless and violent Anarchist, who wanted to destroy it all. Anderson and Peart have returned to their colourful creation to explore the places and the characters that still have a hold on their imaginations.

Marinda Peake is a woman with a quiet, perfect life in a small village; she long ago gave up on her dreams and ambitions to take care of her ailing father, an alchemist and an inventor. When he dies, he gives Marinda a mysterious inheritance: a blank book that she must fill with other people's stories - and ultimately her own.

Clockwork Lives is a steampunk Canterbury Tales and much more, as Marinda strives to change her life from a mere "sentence or two" to a true epic.

A fine adventure

A rollicking tale, providing a lot of depth to the clockwork word. if you're a Rush fan, even better! you'll love the tiny references to songs and lyrics skillfully tucked into the crevasses of the story! Neil and Kevin did a fine job!

Anderson & Peart Rock Again!

Another interesting and thought provoking novel that tells one amazing life story after another. I can't wait to listen to the final installment of the trilogy, "Clockwork Destiny"!

Well done!

Even better than the first novel and expanding on the first. If you enjoyed the first one you will enjoy this one too. Bravo!

Better than the first one!

I wondered how they would make a sequel to Clockwork Angels but the story idea was great! Well performed (I never had to guess who was speaking) and although I guessed the ending didn't detract at all from the journey.

Loved it.

It is a very enjoyable series of stories with a life that connects them all.
Probably enjoyed more if Clockwork Angela is read first.

loved this

I liked that their were different narrators for the different stories. the story itself was fun and creative. I was glad to have more of these places from clockwork angels, and the backstories and character developments. also loved finding all the hidden RUSH lyrics

can't go wrong with Anderson and Peart!

I absolutely loved this! When my own life felt chaotic and too full, I found I could lose myself in the stories of these characters' adventures. One theme was that of some characters showing obvious growth, others no change, and still others, regression. The novel itself did not disappoint--lively narrators (as a blind reader, I have heard my share, and most of the narration was engaging and superb); my only complaints were that supplementary material like dedications, prefaces, afterwords, etc., were not included; also, in the publisher's summary, Peart was listed as one narrator, but there was none evident here; he had a voice made for narration, and I would have loved to hear any contribution he made. Or, am I missing something, LOL? If you haven't yet listened to the first novel, which he did read, you're in for a treat. Also, as others have stated, all the little lyrical references from Rush songs, as well as nods to the band in the guise of characters--and even The Percussor, which ably describes Neil's crazy drumming--were icing on the cake.

Order versus Chaos versus Freedom?

Definitely a great collection of stories. As with the first book, the authors leave you with the impression that an ordered existence can't be happy and free though. I suspect they were shooting to suggest balance but either way it doesn’t marr the story lines. I definitely enjoyed reading another edition of adventure in this fanciful steam technology world.
