Publisher's summary

The Kelso-McIvey rehabilitation center is a place of hope and healing for both its patients and dedicated staff. And for its directors, it's a lifelong dream that's about to be destroyed, if David McIvey has his way. A brilliant surgeon but a man whose ego rivals his skill with a scalpel, David McIvey now plans to close the clinic and replace it with a massive new surgery center, with himself at the helm.

Because he is poised to desecrate the dreams of so many, it's no surprise that somebody dares to stop him in cold blood. When David McIvey is murdered outside the clinic's doors, lawyer Barbara Holloway must use her razor-sharp instincts and take-no-prisoners attitude to create a defense for the two members of the clinic accused of his murder.

2/2004

I love her books but this is read in voices for each character and it is very difficult to listen to. I assume the story is good but have trouble discovering.

Another Good One

Enjoyed the story. Each Kate Wilhem book is unique enough that they all seem fresh. Anna Fields did a good job with the reading. Although she has one nasally male voice she sometimes uses the rest of the voices are good and the narrative is read with just the right expressiveness.

OK not great

I've been rationing myself on the Wilhelm books read by Anna Field since Field & Wilhelm seem linked in my mind (and with Field's death that will end). This book was just OK. It's got all the elements of the other Wilhelm's I've read (grumpy but loving father, cooking, Barbara's commitment, analysis, Bailey's eccentricity etc.), but the story was too contrived for me. The revelation of the guilty person seemed pulled out of a hat. Not a bad book - jut OK.

A good short unabridged Kate Wilhelm Story

A good short unabridged Kate Wilhelm story. I have read 4 others & love her books. They are a good blend of legal problem solving, sleuthing, and enough action to keep the pace up. The more I read the books and became familiar with the charactors, the more I wanted. I recommend it.

A good listen.

Good story line, strong protagonist, nuanced character development, strong ending. Despite some clunky voice renditions an enjoyable listen.

"Touched A Live Wire"

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, and if you like book 1 & 2, which are the 2 best stories for a faster pace and mystery, then read 7,8,9 as the characters build on each of these books. I read them out of order, which took a bit of the enjoyment out of the books until I had gotten to all 3 stories. They are mysteries that stand alone, but a few of the characters repeat and build. If this does not matter to you, then go by the synopsis.

What did you like best about this story?

I always love the references to Thing 1 and Thing 2 and of course Bailey. This is Darren's story and if I had read in order, I would have enjoyed books 8,9 much better.

Have you listened to any of Anna Fields’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I purchased all of this author that the late great ms Fields read just because Anna read them. A good mystery is only as good as the reader and A.F. is Barbara. I love A.F. male voices and can envision all the wonderful characters author has developed.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It had intrigue and a bit of romance development. I love the Thing 1 & 2 scenes that are described in some of the books. It makes me wonder if author has maine coon cats as she has it spot on.

SKIP IT!

I have listened to over 150 books from Audible and this is one I should have just skipped. It contained no likable characters, an uninteresting plot and a ridiculous ending. Not much going for this listen as far as Im concerned.

MY second favorite I in this series.

At first I thought I had downloaded the wrong book. It didn't start out w Barbara Halloway or the usual gang. But she eventually entered the picture. I'm warming to the narrator. I never seem to guess the correct "bad guy" in her books. She truly has a gift of making twists & turns, esp at the endings.

Good story, narration not so much...

I listened to this novel after Desperate Measures, which I really enjoyed. This one took longer to get my attention. It was much slower and the narration alternated between a monotone and terrible voices, especially the male characters. I hate to say it, but I almost quit a few times.

Great read!

I enjoy this series and love the confidence and intelligence of the main character. Her relationship with her father is endearing. She’s a good sleuth. The narrator does an excellent job as well.
