Publisher's Summary

This volume is the outgrowth of a series of articles, dealing with incidents in my life, which were published consecutively in the Outlook. While they were appearing in that magazine I was constantly surprised at the number of requests which came to me from all parts of the country, asking that the articles be permanently preserved in book form. I am most grateful to the Outlook for permission to gratify these requests. I have tried to tell a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment. My regret is that what I have attempted to do has been done so imperfectly. The greater part of my time and strength is required for the executive work connected with the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, and in securing the money necessary for the support of the institution. Much of what I have said has been written on board trains, or at hotels or railroad stations while I have been waiting for trains, or during the moments that I could spare from my work while at Tuskegee. Without the painstaking and generous assistance of Mr. Max Bennett Thrasher I could not have succeeded in any satisfactory degree.

    "Wonderful!"

This was a great listen. Learning about Washington's struggle to bring education to black people was extremely enlightening. The performance was very calm and matter of fact just like his writing. I was given a free copy of this book for an unbiased review.

"An Important Piece of Literature and History"

Up From Slavery is such an important work. I think Booker T. Washington was a high achiever. He did so much for education. Although born into slavery, he moved forward and was a wise man. What he accomplished in his lifetime was incredible. I loved listening to this audiobook. Something he said rings so true, "Only great men cultivate love." I think he embraced this philosophy. Glorious.

Arthur Grey did a terrific job narrating this audibook. He spoke clearly and thoughtfully which is how I would perceive Mr. Washington reading his own words aloud.

    "Up from Slavery"

Great story from a great man in history. He told the story of his life and his accomplishments with such humility and grace. He and those like him that worked hard to better himself and those around him are Great American Heroes. While some of the grammar and dialect used didn't seem to be the grammatically it may have been at the time this was written as it's over 100 years old.

Great narration! Well done all the way. Arthur Grey will definitely be added to my list of favorite narrators.

I received a free audio version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

    "Great perspective"
What did you love best about Up from Slavery?

Being an autobiography, this is obviously a true story. I think that it is a must read/listen -along with other books in this genre - in order to gain some perspective into what is being said today in this country... what is being said by the media, and how we think of race relations in our day.

Which character – as performed by Arthur Grey – was your favorite?

The audiobook is mostly narration and Arthur Grey does a very nice job with it. Pleasant sounding voice, great audio quality!

"A man well ahead of his time"

This autobiography of Booker Washington was a very good listen. I learned quite a bit about him that I didn't know and he did well describing the times in which he lived. The trouble with so many people being emancipated with really no idea of what to do or how to do it is captured nicely. His journey to help those people is inspiring. It's wonderful to know that these multitudes of people had someone like Mr. Washington in their corner to help lift them up. It's also refreshing to hear his philosophies on individual responsibility and the disdain for government social programs (handouts).

The narrator did a good job. It was a bit monotonous at times, but I have a hard time faulting the narrator only because this is an autobiography, not an action novel.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
