Eye Opener

I have never read this although I've wanted to for a long time. I hated every time I had to get out of the car and stop listening. Knowing it was written by someone who lived during that time period made the story more real. What a sad time in our history.

Interesting story from a historical perspective

Just a heads up, this story was written during a time when slavery was active and the author meant it as a way to convince people of the evils of slavery. Because of this, the “N” word is used frequently. It’s a good example of the horrors of slavery and it’s interesting to see how the author uses christianity to explain why it’s wrong, especially since many slave owners were “Christian “.

Inspirational and uplifting in spite of the subject matter.

A sad but inspiring book masterfully written in a way that transports you back to the Civil War antebellum years.

Legend has it, upon meeting the author, President Lincoln said to her, "so you're the little old lady who wrote the book that started this great war?"

It may not be a actual quote, but considering this book was second only to the Bible in terms of distribution at the time of the Civil War, there's likely some truth to the statement.

Good story, but hard to keep my attention span

Any additional comments?

I love historical stories and non-fiction. With this one, I'm really having a tough time following it! I have to really concentrate to keep up with what's going on. I'm not sure if its the way it's read, or the way it's written, or both. A lot of the lingo and pronunciation loses me! So far (I'm not finished yet), I definitely find the story to be interesting, and want to finish it. I may check to see if there are other readers to choose from.
