Audible Editor Reviews

Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Female, 2013

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star had a hand in selecting. For more great books performed by Hollywood’s finest, click here.

A school administrator and avid reader and listener of books. At least an hour of every day is spent in the car, and that's where the bulk of my listening is done. I tend to listen to books on "faster" mode so I can get through more books!

    "I can't believe I waited this long"

The movie was an icon of my youth, and yet I never read the book until this week, and the age of 44. What a great book, and better than the movie, which seems nearly impossible. Baum's imagination and the story he crafted is one of interest, courage, and compassion. The characters are more developed and rich than those in the movie, and Dorothy's quest is more satisfying. Anne Hathaway's narration is outstanding, and I hope she narrates more books!

"An absolute delight – and my kids loved it too :)"

What a surprise. I grew up with the 1939 film adaption and therefore can’t remember a moment in my life when I didn’t “know” the Oz narrative. But this was my first encounter with the original text and I was charmed from the first sentence.

I guess the film doesn’t stray too far from the original. But I had a great time spotting the differences when they did appear (and then trying to guess the motivation for MGM introducing those changes into the film). Overall, I think the book is considerably more charismatic than the film – and that is intended as seriously high praise.

Reading other reviewers, it seems the most divisive element of this particular reading is Anne Hathaway’s voice characterizations. I listened to this recording with my three primary-school-aged boys, and I believe it was the voice-acting that kept them glued to the speakers. So for my money, Hathaway did a fantastic job and definitely deserves a five-star rating. But I can also understand how it grated on some people (I’m guessing adults who were listening without kids?).

This engaging story has truly stood the test of time, and really does deserve its reputation as a classic.

    "Great story poor narrator"
What made the experience of listening to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz the most enjoyable?

I have always enjoyed this story

Did Anne Hathaway do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Her narration of the story is not as good as I thought it was

    "Lovely"
Would you listen to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz again? Why?

It's a fabulous and engaging story.

What did you like best about this story?

The performance was phenomenal! This is the first audiobook I've listened to with my children and I wasn't sure if they'd enjoy listening to books as much as I do. They are enthralled with this book and the performance and can't wait to get back in the car to listen.

What does Anne Hathaway bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She does such a good job with the different characters as well as the narration. Her performance is no doubt the reason my little girls love this book so much.

    Any additional comments?

For anyone thinking of trying an audiobook with their children, this is the perfect book with which to try. We may even listen a second time!

    Any additional comments?

I have always loved this story. I had a really hard time listening to Ms. Hathaway read. All the voices were a bit ridiculous, but what REALLY put me over the edge was the Wizard from Nebraska sounding like he's from the hills of Georgia.

I would have cast almost ANYONE else to read this book.

    "Great narration"

I bought this audio edition for the reader and I was spot on! Hathaway does an excellent job. Some of her characterizations are a bit 21st century but that's okay by me.

IMHO, this is a wonderful parent/child listen.

Too much with the silly voices, which detracted from Ms. Hathaway's flawless narration. Otherwise this would've been perfect.

    "Incredible Anne Hathaway!"

I couldn't help but compare this to the 1939 movie (Judy Garland as Dorothy) production that I saw on television when I was a teenager because that movie created a very special image of the story in my memory. I have to say that this production (Anne Hathaway's narration) is as good but also in a different way. Anne Hathaway is just amazing in narrating different characters in the story (and I wasn't particularly a big fan of this actress in movies). She creates a special world out of this story. She must have gone through a lot of trouble preparing for playing more than ten different characters. As a teenager, I thought the story had (cute) flaws (e.g., a brainless scarecrow wouldn't be asking for a brain if he did not have a brain, etc.), but now that I am an adult, I could just enjoy the way this brilliant actress presents the story. I highly recommend this audiobook.

    "An enjoyable performance."

I greatly enjoyed the story Baum wrote, and don't know why I waited so many years to "read" it. I found Hathaway's performance quote enjoyable as well. She was able to bring a few different voices to the characters and I think it added a nice touch. Children would probably enjoy listening to her read this book to them, and as an adult, I can say I liked it as well.

The world of Oz is full of fantastic people and strange things, and I can't wait to get back into it in the other Oz books.
