Publisher's summary

Fleeing a disastrous marriage, Helen Huntingdon retreats to the desolate mansion, Wildfell Hall, with her son, Arthur. There, she makes her living as a painter. Finding it difficult to avoid her neighbors, she is soon an object of speculation and gossip. Brontë portrays Helen's eloquent struggle for independence at a time when society defined a married woman as her husband's property.

Beautiful Brontë!

I found Tenant of Wildfell Hall Is a marvelous noble filled with subtle intrigues and not-so-subtle commentaries on both virtuous and despotic personalities. One seldom could find a better comparison between virtue and vice as one finds in this book. The story is entertaining and the narrators are exceptional!

Gorgeous in every way

No wonder that the Bronte sisters have provided the best literature on the planet. This novel reminds me of why I read. A gem worth a thousand kingdoms.

A Beautiful Narration of this wonderful classic

The Tennant of Wildfell Hall is one of my favourite Bronte novels and I have read it and listened to it many times. I love this version in particular. The narration is excellent and Alex Jennings & Jenny Agutter do a wonderful job in reading this classic story.

Best Bronte novel I've listened to!

This book is excellent. To a reader in 2020, the gender politics make it far more palatable than Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights.

Wonderfully satisfying and eloquently

Wonderfully satisfying and eloquently told story that imparts both wisdom, love, duty, devotion, pride and hope. Chapters full of the good, the bad, the blessing and the cursing, the sweet promise of hope, and flowers surviving harsh winters! 💗

Traditional Gothic romance

The book is written in the best style of gothic romance, including the religious and moral agonizing of the protagonists which might grate on modern sensibilities. I enjoyed how well it was written and performed. My own small annoyance is that too many of the main characters had surnames starting with H which led to some confusion for me part way through. If you like gothic novels you’ll like this one.

Beautifully written

This story is a difficult one of youthful mistakes, love, disappointed hopes and unconditional, selfless love. It’s so beautifully and compassionately written. I thought the performances were wonderful!

I am glad I listened to this book

I always stumble upon the dilemma of the feelings I am left with after completing a Brontë Sisters’ Novel vs. Austen’s Novels. I have visited the authors’ homes, and to have great knowledge of their scenery from the front window of the Brontë’s home gives me understanding of the dark religious tones of their writing. However, I must confess to when I get to the end of an Austen novel I want to pick up another immediately. When finishing a Brontë novel I need a respite from the heavy hearted style along w/the righteous religious moral’s of the writers. Do not misunderstand me, I admire the talents and fortitude in these amazing women writers, but I believe we all need both.

A Surprising Treat

This book is far from my go-to type. But, I'm very happy that I went out of my comfort zone and gave it a chance. It will hold a special place in my heart.
