Publisher's Summary

Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary and yet somehow lovable. At friendly meetings, and when the wine was to his taste, something eminently human beaconed from his eye; something indeed which never found its way into his talk, but which spoke not only in these silent symbols of the after-dinner face, but more often and loudly in the acts of his life. He was austere with himself; drank gin when he was alone, to mortify a taste for vintages; and though he enjoyed the theatre, had not crossed the doors of one for 20 years. But he had an approved tolerance for others; sometimes wondering, almost with envy, at the high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds; and in any extremity inclined to help rather than to reprove. "I incline to Cain's heresy," he used to say quaintly: "I let my brother go to the devil in his own way." In this character, it was frequently his fortune to be the last reputable acquaintance and the last good influence in the lives of down-going men. And to such as these, so long as they came about his chambers, he never marked a shade of change in his demeanor.

    "WOW! What a WONDERFUL Narration!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, this is an amazing narration of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I was blown away by the narration!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dr Jekyll- this character was well narrated and portrayed by Austin!

What about Austin Vanfleet’s performance did you like?

His versatility, it's hard for narrators to play different characters. Austin does a superb job narrating the different characters. It brings the novel to life!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Honestly, I loved the narration. I usually stay away from audiobooks because of bad narrators. However, this narration has given me hope(I rarely leave reviews- however this was an excellent narration)!

    "Really Came to Life"
If you could sum up The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in three words, what would they be?

    Evocative, thought-provoking, sophisticated.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I want to say Poole, simply because the way the narrator voiced him reminded me of George Coe's character Woodhouse, in Archer, but I really liked his portrayal of Dr. Jekyll. Jekyll has a more dynamic emotional range than most of the other characters, and I felt the narrator captured that quite well.

What does Austin Vanfleet bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Personally, I thought he brought life to the characters in a way that I've never gotten from this kind of literature. They've always seemed very dry and dead on paper, but they really came to life in this narration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It didn't make me laugh or cry, but it was extremely hard to turn off. It really hooked me, short as it was.

    "Affected reading"

I was a little put off by this reader--his portrayal of the various character voices felt forced and needlessly affected.
