Publisher's summary

The Return of the Native (1878) is one of Hardy's most popular novels. Set on the brooding Egdon heath it traces the lives and loves of five people. Clym Yeobright, the native, returns to Egdon from a successful career in Paris to pursue a dream of educating the poorer local people. Eustacia Vye, a young woman unhappy with life on Egdon wishes for love and life in a city. Damon Wildeve, an innkeeper and ex-engineer is a young womaniser. Thomasin Yeobright, a cousin of Clym, is a simple country girl. And finally the mysterious but faithful reddleman Diggory Venn. When the lives of these people become intertwined we see all sides of human nature, good and bad.

Worth perseverance

I had to listen to the first nine chapters twice as I had no idea what was going on the first time I listened. It was worth the effort though. It was a moving story and the reader's voice was pleasant.

Extremely good value for money!

Would you listen to The Return of the Native again? Why?

Return of the Native is one of my favourite Hardy books. I've listened to it countless times over the years through my local library so I decided to buy a copy for future use.

What did you like best about this story?

From the first brooding description of Egdon Heath to the final dramatic chapters Hardy enthralls us with his mastery of language. The story itself is captivating but the way it is told is what makes this book a masterpiece.

What about Tadhg Hynes’s performance did you like?

I loved the way he engaged with the book. You could tell that he was enjoying reading it all the while. The characters were well performed and the understanding of the text made the story all the better.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

What Hardy book doesn't evoke extreme emotion. Be prepared to have your heart-strings pulled.

Any additional comments?

I'd like to thank Audible for providing this version. Some of the other versions are out of my price range but happily for me this one loses nothing in quality for costing less. Well done all concerned.
