Publisher's Summary

"All states, all powers, that have held and hold rule over men have been and are either republics or principalities. Principalities are either hereditary, in which the family has been long established; or they are new. The new are either entirely new, as was Milan to Francesco Sforza, or they are, as it were, members annexed to the hereditary state of the prince who has acquired them, as was the kingdom of Naples to that of the King of Spain. Such dominions thus acquired are either accustomed to live under a prince, or to live in freedom; and are acquired either by the arms of the prince himself, or of others, or else by fortune or by ability."

"A reading of the classic novel"

This audiobook is a direct narration of the classic book by Machiavelli, and is at its culmination a reasoned, yet passionate "call-to-arms" to his countryman to rise and support Italy. The book is at base a "guidebook" for how to win and keep governance of a country or "principality." However, listening to it with the modern realities of greater gender equality and religious enlightenment, it also provides some very humorous moments. I read this book about 25 years ago in a college Philosophy class, and it was interesting to note that much of the logic still makes sense today.

The narration moved at a rapid pace, and with so many of the people and principalities mentioned so historically distant from the present, it was occasionally hard to follow. It is an interesting listen, but if one intended to actually analyze and fully understand Machiavelli's reasoning, I think a slower pace would be needed. The narrator did an excellent job with pronunciation and the like, but the pace was like running a sprint, rather than a marathon.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

"The Classic Treatise of Political Strategy"

The Classic Treatise of Political Strategy by Niccolo Machiavelli stands the test of time. The subject matter is straight forward in this translation. The narration is provided by Carson Beck who does a good job with the performance of the epic material. This review copy audiobook was provided by the author/narrator/publisher free of charge via Audiobook Boom.

"A Silly, Silly, Silly Book. But Narrated Well..."

Story: I know, I know, this is a classic. Great and Powerful People read it to this day and follow its advice. If so, God help us all. This is nothing but wacky, hindsight is 20/20 advice from a weasel who lived in 16th century Italy. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Because we all know how good the Italians were (and are) at crafting Statehood back then, and even to this day.

Performance: Carson Beck did a phenomenal job reading perhaps some of the blandest , out of date and obscure advice that Machiavelli could provide. Carson was the high point of this book and the only reason I could recommend it.

Overall: If you'd like to hear some professional narration (and God knows some of the Audible narrators could use just that) get this audio book. Otherwise go spend your money on Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, as at least they will taste good. (I am in no way affiliated with Reese's but I do enjoy their product). Oh, the one other situation in which this might be worth a read is if your Aircraft Carrier Nimitz gets caught in an electrical storm and you are transported (along with your squadron of F-14s) in time to the 16th century in the Mediterranean and you need to handle issues of State with Italian leaders.

This audio book was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review.
