Publisher's Summary

"All states, all powers, that have held and hold rule over men have been and are either republics or principalities. Principalities are either hereditary, in which the family has been long established; or they are new. The new are either entirely new, as was Milan to Francesco Sforza, or they are, as it were, members annexed to the hereditary state of the prince who has acquired them, as was the kingdom of Naples to that of the King of Spain. Such dominions thus acquired are either accustomed to live under a prince, or to live in freedom; and are acquired either by the arms of the prince himself, or of others, or else by fortune or by ability."

"The Classic Treatise of Political Strategy"

The Classic Treatise of Political Strategy by Niccolo Machiavelli stands the test of time. The subject matter is straight forward in this translation. The narration is provided by Carson Beck who does a good job with the performance of the epic material. This review copy audiobook was provided by the author/narrator/publisher free of charge via Audiobook Boom.

"The end always justifies the means"

The Prince is a short work of political and social philosophy for those in power. In Machiavelli's day it was the princes of the land, but can be applied to any position of authority. The question it asks is does the end justify the means used to attain it. I have enjoyed this narration of The Prince as it gives an extra layer to it being letters written to an up and coming noble.

The narration voice fit the personality one would think the original author would have in writing such a book. So for this I would recommend this audio book to everyone as it makes you think hard on the moral dilemmas of being purely rational in mindset.

I’ve been wanting to read this for a long time. And I’m glad I checked it in my list. Politics is not for me. But I enjoyed listening to it. Carson Beck did a great job reading it.

I received this audiobook free for an honest review by the author, narrator, or publisher. Thanks!

"A reading of the classic novel"

This audiobook is a direct narration of the classic book by Machiavelli, and is at its culmination a reasoned, yet passionate "call-to-arms" to his countryman to rise and support Italy. The book is at base a "guidebook" for how to win and keep governance of a country or "principality." However, listening to it with the modern realities of greater gender equality and religious enlightenment, it also provides some very humorous moments. I read this book about 25 years ago in a college Philosophy class, and it was interesting to note that much of the logic still makes sense today.

The narration moved at a rapid pace, and with so many of the people and principalities mentioned so historically distant from the present, it was occasionally hard to follow. It is an interesting listen, but if one intended to actually analyze and fully understand Machiavelli's reasoning, I think a slower pace would be needed. The narrator did an excellent job with pronunciation and the like, but the pace was like running a sprint, rather than a marathon.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

    "Little fast telling"

I have read the prince on Kindle, book, and now lessening to it. I like the content. However, the audio was little fast so I slow it to 0.8 then it was good.

"Can't tell if this dude is serious."

At times it feels like Machiavelli is almost writing tongue in cheek, throwing light on unflattering aspects of rulership like he is paying them some sort of backhanded compliment. I'm not sure how to interpret him at all. I think I need to get my history down a little better and tackle this again.

The Narrator has an excellent voice, great delivery and pacing. I think there were a handful of words that were likely mispronounced, and twice a few words were duplicated without being edited out. Other than that, the production quality was superb. I could listen to this guy all day.

Overall this is a great listen and you won't feel dishonest the next time you call whichever politician you currently despise, "Machiavellian". And you might actually decide not to use the word at all.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher, author or narrator through audiobookboom.com in exchange for an honest review.
