“The Outsiders transformed young-adult fiction.”—The New York Times
“This remarkable novel gives a moving, credible view of the outsiders from the inside. . . . A book with a powerful message.”—The Horn Book
“Stay gold, Ponyboy.”
No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friends—true friends who would do anything for him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. But not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of a good time is beating up on “greasers” like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect—until the night someone takes things too far.
The Outsiders is a dramatic and enduring work of young adult fiction that laid the groundwork for the genre. S. E. Hinton’s classic novel of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was first published.©1967 S.E. Hinton; (P)1988 Random House, Inc. Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time
Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This particular reader is excellent. The dialect and southern draw by Jim Fyfe is warming and wonderful. What did you like best about this story?
Classic story of the real struggles of adolescence especially where parents are out of the picture (dead or just don't care about their kids). This story is a timeless piece of writing that holds true even in 2018. The characters are charming, deadly and honest.Which character – as performed by Jim Fyfe – was your favorite?
He reads Ponyboy so well. He captures the essence of a southern hood / greaser so well. Hands down the best audio performer for this text. Fyfe's rhythm and timing are impeccable. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
