Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Hemingway's short, evocative sentences have never worked better than in this novella written at the twilight of his career. Donald Sutherland achieves an astonishing performance as old man Santiago, in this story of failure, reckless determination, and victory. –Corey Thrasher

Publisher's Summary

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed Hemingway's power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

    "A True Classic "

Wonderfully narrated by Donald Sutherland, his voice is so pleasant to hear. A great story I have never read before. A masterpiece of literature, no doubt as to why it has become a classic.

the beginning was a little slow but once out to sea the story only gets better as ot goes I tHink it was the narrators tone at the beGinning but he picks up and does this timeless classic justice.

Literal story was, well fishfilled. As for symbolic meanings hidden within the text very enriching and fresh. Donalds voice was a perfect choise as to me he sounds like my imaginary voice of Hemingway.

Donald Sutherland is the perfect voice for the fishermen. The editing could have been better done; sometimes it's far too quiet and you miss vocal nuances. Overall wonderful.

    "Good story telling, I see why it's a classic. I "

It's a book about an old fisherman that's down on his luck. Which wouldn't normally interest me but the book isn't really about that at all. Like all the great classics, it's a book about the human condition and the struggles we face. It's a quick book and I'd recommend it to anyone.
