Publisher's summary

Inspired by The Hobbit and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that J.R.R. Tolkien created to provide "the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues". From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature.

The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between the powers of good and evil.

In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien's great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe – hobbits, elves, and wizards – step colorfully into life. Rob Inglis' narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Unending Songs

The performance good except for the songs. Rob Inglis isn't a particularly good singer, the melodies didn't always resolve, and the songs are all very long. Personally, I began skipping them.

A classic in every way

This is truly a classic that is well worth listening to. The narrator does it justice and, if you can learn to enjoy the occasional song, he fits the part well.

Unbelievably Poor Quality Pictures...

...in my imagination....
I love the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. I have since I was a kid and my dad read these words to us after dinner every night. In my adolescence, we trod the paths to the lonely mountain and Mordor three time. My mind exploded with pictures as my father read... and he never read as well as Rob Inglis has in this amazing audio work-of-art. I close my eyes and my mind flies to the scene as he reads. Afterwards I find my self humming the songs Rob performed. What a gift. No one else should read it... except for my dad.

But my mind pictures are not as clear. They have been muddled by the movie versions. I get excited now when I hear quotes quoted in the movie. Augh! My imagination was so much richer in my youth. Perhaps if I listen to Rob read this 5 or 6 more times, then only his voice, and the voice of my father, will inspire the rich dangerous fantasy world that Tolkien paints.

The books are so much better than the movies.... especially when you have guides like Rob Inglis.

Thank you Audible for finally getting the versions I have been waiting 9 years for you to get: Tolkien UNABRIDGED on audible! Let your imagination fly you through this amazing story. Ignore the movie pictures and create your own! They will be far better.

Wonderful

Everyone in the family enjoyed this tremendously. We listened to the Hobbit first and this is very similar to it. A long recording so worthy of a car trip.

Cheers for Tolkien on Audible

To now listen to this 3 book set without having to keep track of my CD's is a true treat. The written Rings story has a depth of character, culture, history and interwoven plots that the movie version -- however visually wonderful -- just cannot provide. It is good to drop back into the richness of Middle Earth. I have always felt this reader is well suited to the story.

Horrible Covers

The decision to cover up the timeless work of Alan Lee and John Howe on the original audiobook covers with this soulless, non-cannonical, and ultimately fleeting mockery of Tolkien's true power...was folly. Anyways, the trilogy is great. The end when they get to the Mordor full of pee jars and scorching shipping warehouses without AC really ties the story together.

Absolutely disgraceful changing the covers

Disgusting that they would change the covers to "rings of power". The show doesn't cover LotR, this is literally false advertising. Get this Bezos trash off of Tolkien's work.

One of the best trilogies of all time

Absolutely enthralling. I love this series. Tolkien created such an unceasingly interesting tale full of colorful characters, incredible scenery, and deep meaning. I love it and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good adventure!
