Publisher's Summary

During an interval in the Melvinski trial in the large building of the Law Courts the members and public prosecutor met in Ivan Egorovich Shebek's private room, where the conversation turned on the celebrated Krasovski case. Fedor Vasilievich warmly maintained that it was not subject to their jurisdiction, Ivan Egorovich maintained the contrary, while Peter Ivanovich, not having entered into the discussion at the start, took no part in it but looked through the Gazette which had just been handed in.

"Gentlemen," he said, "Ivan Ilych has died!"

"You don't say so!"

"Here, read it yourself," replied Peter Ivanovich, handing Fedor Vasilievich the paper still damp from the press. Surrounded by a black border were the words: "Praskovya Fedorovna Golovina, with profound sorrow, informs relatives and friends of the demise of her beloved husband Ivan Ilych Golovin, Member of the Court of Justice, which occurred on February the 4 of this year 1882. The funeral will take place on Friday at one o'clock in the afternoon."

    "One of Tolstoy's Masterpieces"
    Any additional comments?

I have been reading Russian Literature for some years and Leo Tolstoy is definitely one of my favorite Russian authors, of course he is considered one of the greatest writers of all time! I recommend this audiobook, I’m sure you will enjoy Tolstoy’s unique writing style in the Death of Ivan Ilych, especially when Keith Higinbotham did such a superb job narrating this masterpiece.

I received this audiobook free for an honest review by the author, narrator, or publisher. Thank you!

"An excellent reading of a great story"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Death of Ivan Ilyich to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version in a long time, but I would say that they are at least on par.

What did you like best about this story?

The more depressing a story is, the more I love it, and this was a depressing story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The entire story slowly builds to an overwhelming feeling that you are living your life for the wrong reasons. This all comes together when the cause of death is given.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great story and the narration was great as well. I only give 5 stars to my absolute favourite books (top 10), and 4 stars to really good ones.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys well-written depressing literature.

"A Wonderful Edition to Anyone's Library"

This shorter novel by Tolstoy is by no means short in depth. This one like the others, in my opinion is relevant. This is the second audiobook I have of this story and I love hearing it with a different narrator. I take away something new each time. I feel like I'm listening to greatness.

I really liked Keith Higinbotham's narration. I think he did an outstanding job. He was dramatic in a subtle way. Excellent vocal skills along with inflections made this is a must listen.

"Tolstoy!!! Great book to be introduced to him!"

**I received this audio book for free from Audiobook Boom and the publisher for a honest review.**

Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his dying so much as a passing thought. But one day, death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise, he is brought face to face with his own mortality.

I've never read or listened to anything from Tolstoy, but this is probably the best short novel from him that you can start with. This really does come across as a moving masterpiece about death and dying. It gives both a realistic look at what one can go through when they have an illness and what those around the person not only puts them through but what they endure. Even though the setting occurred so long ago it's truly timeless.

At first I wasn't giving this novel a chance. The use of names was a bit over bearing. Instead of using he or him, Tolstoy choice to repeatedly give the persons full name. Once I got use to this and could move past it I really started to enjoy the book and understand just what Tolstoy was showing. Keith Higinbotham does an amazing job at voicing the characters with their changing emotional states. The only down side that I really had with this audio book, was that there were several times where it seemed as though Higinbotham was repeating the same sentences. Almost as though he would start the sentence but didn't like how it was sounding and wanted to start over again. This happened about 6 to 10 times throughout the audio book. I have never read this book before so I don't know if it's an error in the audio production or if the book itself repeats lines in this fashion. It didn't really cause a disruption in the book, it was just a small annoyance.

If you want to read Tolstoy, have lost a loved one do to a severe illness, or just want to have a classic take on death itself and how one can endure through hardship then The Death of Ivan Ilyich should be added to your audio book collection.
