Publisher's Summary

Howard Phillips Lovecraft has been hailed by literary critics as the inventor of modern horror and a cultivating force behind such modern writers as Robert Bloch (Psycho), Wes Craven (The Craft, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream), and Stephen King (Pet Cemetary, Carrie, Children of the Corn), just to name a few.

These following Lovecraft tales can be found in this audiobook:

  • "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"
  • "Dagon"

"The Shadow Over Innsmouth" and "Dagon", arguably the most mind-provoking stories by H. P. Lovecraft, are read by Wayne June ("The Dunwitch Horror" and the "Call of Cthulhu") bringing to life horrors from the mind of the Master himself, in a way that only he can.

Wayne June made this a must-listen

Comparing to the first volume and the fifth ( the two I have finished before), this volume may not be as packed in contents. Both stories are on the Deep Ones so it made sense to put these two together. "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" is good, the pace started slow and almost monotonous, but increasingly action-packed and exciting from 1/3 to 4/5 mark, typical of Lovecraft's works. "Dagon" though, is too short and lacks dramatical narratives. Compared with the first volume which has "The Dunwich Horror" and "The Call of Cthulhu", the length might be a shortcoming of this volume.
But overall it was worth listening solely because of the exceptional performance of Wayne June, whose delivery of Zadok (Shadow) and Narrator (Dagon) is strikingly vivid and emotional, that carries the listener through the most monotonous and tangling of Lovecraft's passages. And you don't want to miss out on the Deep Ones.
So, the conclusion is: Get it. Get the entire collection.

    Amazing!

This is my best purchase I've made on Audible thus far.
The stories; genuinely horrifying and disturbing, made manifest by the excellent voice work of Wayne June, is sure to strike you with an unsettling feeling quite difficult to shake off.
If you're in the mood on a stormy night, close your eyes and let yourself be swept into the maddening world of eldritch horror.

Wayne June is a national treasure

Seriously. The story is amazing (because HP Lovecraft), but the delivery is singularly amazing because Wayne June has a voice that (as far as science can tell) narrated the birth of our universe and the subsequent elder god invasion shortly thereafter.

    Best religion ever!

The best part is when he chose to embrace what he was. Shadow Marveled! I wish there were more Innsmouth stories.

    excellent narrator.

the best I've heard for Lovecraft narration. The Shadow of Innsmouth is not contained in the necronomicon and provides more depth to mythos, perfectly fitted with Dagon. I hope this series continues.

The narration matches the story perfectly

This story was written in the 1930's, so the writing style takes a while to get used to if you're accustomed to reading/hearing more contemporary works, I guess. Honestly, I had to listen to it twice before I was able to follow the story. I tend to listen to these audiobooks while I'm doing other things so maybe if I wasn't a distracted listener, I could have picked up on it the first time around, but maybe not. I liked this audiobook because the narrator matches this writing style so well. Also, the story itself is kind of interesting, if you ever happen to hear/read about the reptilians/global elite in some of the alternative media.

Flawless Narration of a timeless classic.

Wayne June does an exceptional job audibly creating the dark atmosphere portrayed in these timeless horror classics. Whether you're new to Lovecraft or brave soul returning for more, you won't be disappointed.

    Lovecraft's Best

Utterly awesome. Innsmouth is my favourite Lovecraft story and if you aren't familiar with the escape scene then you need to hear it - horror at it's best!

    Great

One of H.P. Love crafts best stories, worth a credit. Shame it's only a few hours long.

Wayne June is the ideal Lovecraft narrator

Wayne June is the perfect narrator for Lovecraft's work. He does a great job conveying the tone of cosmic horror.
