Publisher's summary

"A piece of perfect storytelling." (Robert Louis Stevenson)

Trust. Betrayal. Revenge. The Count of Monte Cristo is the quintessential masterpiece of Alexandre Dumas. In Edmond Dantes we find an early materialization of the modern superhero. He is a dashing young sailor imprisoned unjustly for treason. While in prison he meets a holy man who imparts to him all his wisdom of languages, philosophy, science, and literature. The "abbe" also divulges the profound secret of a hidden treasure. Dantes realizes that with such immense wealth one could do a generous amount of good for one's friends. On the other hand, one could also wreak a hateful vengeance on one's enemies.

Now freed from prison, and armed with untold riches, a wealth of intelligence, and a countenance utterly unrecognizable, Dantes fulfills his vow to wreak complete and utter revenge on those who conspired against him.

Excellent performance of an incredible story! I am glad I held out from purchasing this with a different performer since I would have missed out on this gem. Highly recommend this audiobook.

Great book backed by an absolutely wonderful performance

This audiobook is amazing. Despite being the unabridged version at 60 hours, I can say that the performance made the whole experience enjoyable. Highly recommended.

One of my favorites

The story of Edmond Dantes is so full of sorrow, grief, excitement, adventure, anticipation and hope. It was wonderfully narrated. It filled my mind and imagination with the scenes the story depicted. Definitely one of my favorites.

The proof is in the narrator!

The Narrator is a key point when embarking on an audio book that is over 50 hours long. To that point B.J. Harrison is to be highly praised for his performance! I will be looking for more titles graced with his narration.

Wow—just wow.

It’s astounding.
Each character had their own voice and their own intonation. My husband and I took two years to listen to it, and absolutely loved it. Best audiobook we have ever heard.

Best Way to Experience The Count of Monte Cristo

I've never read the Count of Monte Cristo, and after hearing about how great it was, I decided to take a shot. I am so glad I did. The story is beautifully crafted with incredibly well rounded characters and intriguing plot. It was tense, heart-wrenching, and satisfying.

The audiobook file itself is superb. B.J. Harrison is an amazing narrator. He changed his voice well from character to character in such ways I always knew who was talking, and he put everything he had into conveying the emotions of the characters themselves. The story was already well-written enough to conjure emotions on its own, but adding Harrison's voice acting skills made this audiobook perfect.

The Count of Monte Cristo was written in the 1830s-40s by a Frenchman and was published in a series of parts in a magazine over several years. this was good to know as the story does seem to wander at times. After listening to the whole story though, it's obvious nothing was wasted nor was it filler content. It all had a purpose. Understanding the way this story was published made it easier to be patient with the side plots that were initially confusing.

As an inspiring author, The Count of Monte Cristo has reignited my inspiration and desire to write something spectacular. I dare not hope to be a master of fiction crafting as The Count's author, Alexander Dumas, was, but I can hope to be at least half as good. I highly recommend this story, particularly by this narrator.

5 out of 5 Millions in Diamonds

What did you love best about The Count of Monte Cristo [Classic Tales Edition]?
I love, love, love this classic novel. Definitely one of my all time favorites. The complexity of it is just brilliant. It's not just a revenge story (though the revenge is juicy and deserved!) but also a story of hope and forgiveness.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Count of Monte Cristo [Classic Tales Edition]?
Edmund's final revenge that turns into forgiveness.

Have you listened to any of B.J. Harrison’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He narrates a few of Poe's short stories I love and his voice work is amazing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Revenge at all costs!

Any additional comments?
The length of the novel can be intimidating but it is so engaging, and the prose is so poetic. I book marked a lot of sections. There are so many details between the events and the characters' connections. There is just so much planning involved that A) I would have loved to see the outlines that Dumas made and B) I don't know how anyone can read an abridged version. So many little details from early in the story come back later. You may think something is insignificant, but it's not. Every subplot has a purpose. I love the evolution of Edmund's character from innocent and naive to worldly, educated and cunning. I don't know how Edmund juggled all those identities and stories.
