Publisher's summary

Exclusively from Audible

For 15 years the weaver Silas Marner has plied his loom near the village of Raveloe, alone and unjustly in exile, cut off from faith and human love, he cares only for his hoard of golden guineas. But two events occur that will change his life forever; his gold disappears and a golden-haired baby girl appears. But where did she come from and who really stole the gold? This moving tale sees Silas eventually redeemed and restored to life by the unlikely means of his love for the orphan child Eppie.

One of Eliot's most admired and loved works, Silas Marner is a tender and moving tale of betrayal, greed, loss, and redemption, with a finely drawn picture of early 19th-century England before the loss of the simple rural way of life. This moral tale shows the importance of valuing what really matters in life and that the hand we are dealt may ultimately lead to our happiness. Though it is Eliot's shortest book it still retains all the elements which are most recognisable and admirable about her work.

George Eliot was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological insight.

Fantastic narrator!

The narrator really made the story for me. He brought all the characters to life so very well!

The story itself is very much character driven. Thought provoking and intriguing for sure.

An old favorite

Having been required reading in high school, it’s been 3 decades since I first read Silas Marner. I loved it even more this time, listening to it in the reader’s accent only added to the the experience.

The first half was quite slow and a bit dull but overall this is a great story for fans of George Eliot.

Very well narrated, and the book better than I had remembered.

Read as a teenager. Now retired, desired to revisit this memory and how glad I am that I took the time. I should like to find another book with such kind characters.

Sweet river of prose takes you back in time.

Mary Ann Evans (the heart, soul and hand of her nom de plume George Eliot) skillfully walks you through the old village so that you see and hear a way of life long extinct. Her words bring alive the local gents in the pub as you hear their individual voices and opinions and smell the ale on their breath! The miserly covetousness of Silas Marner rivels that of a Scrooge who has ended his engagement and is left with only money for his lover. This book still deserves to be read or listened to for the enduring power it has to impart simple contentment and common sense lessons about the human condition.

Outstanding narration of timeless story

This beautiful and tender story, which reflects Eliot’s (Evans’) exquisite writing and character development, was made even more remarkable by the flawless and entertaining narration. It took a bit to get used to the accents and I slowed the speed to .90, but these were minor concessions and well worth the experience.
