Publisher's summary

One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

In Pride and Prejudice, the Bennet sisters try to find their way in the repressive strictures of 19th-century society. Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and the experience of falling in love, and she superbly describes a world which, despite being more than two centuries old, still resonates with modern concerns.

A perfect narration of a perfect book

Where does Pride and Prejudice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the second edition of Pride and Prejudice that I purchased - I already have an older version (different narrator) and I am so glad that I saw Rosamund Pike's name and immediately bought this one. It is absolute perfection. It has long been one my favorite books but with her priceless narration if is certainly going to be on of the Beloved ones.

Which character – as performed by Rosamund Pike – was your favorite?

Practically all of them. She is a brilliant narrator with magnificent voice and managed to make even Mrs Bennet tolerable - not a small feat in itself. Her Mr Bennet is fantastic (actually I think she did it better than Sutherlend's performance in the 2005 movie) - she managed to subtly underline a hint of malevolence in his humor which I personally think is there and most people do not pay attention to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me smile in sheer sensual pleasure all the time I listened to it (could not stop and listened through the night).

Any additional comments?

A wonderful audio book, simply wonderful. I hope this is not the last time I listen to something narrated by Rosamund Pike.

One of the best books ever written

Where does Pride and Prejudice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

A wonderfully funny, insightful, and entertaining social commentary. May well be the best Jane Austen novel - although, of course, it is hard to choose among her many wonderful pieces.

Which character – as performed by Rosamund Pike – was your favorite?

Rosamund Pike's reading is on the spot. She drew me in and made me hear things that I missed in reading the book like 25 times already...

Wonderful performance of a wonderful classic!

I've re-read Pride and Prejudice once a year for about the last 22 years, and I always love it, but this performance by Rosamund Pike has brought it beautifully to life for me all over again. Just a superb reading with just enough color and shade to give each character their unique voice. Highly recommend!

I can definitely see the interest

A classic, but let's just step back from that and "pretend" no one has ever heard of "Pride and Prejudice" and rate it from an objective point of view. The narration is absolutely fantastic. The interpretation of Austen's words are spot on and every character's voice is unique and absolutely believable. The story itself is fantastic and barring the "flowery" vocabulary and sentence structure it seems pertinent even today and it was published in 1813! I love the characters and the interactions between them--some you love, some you love to hate. Really just a great book. Enjoy.

They don't write like this anymore!

Brilliant lush language and turns of phrase. Astute insights into human behavior customs and manners of the times. Wonderful narrator. Almost as wonderful a novel as the Forsythe Saga😊.

Awesome

I learned so much of love and the struggles we all have with it… I’m better for it… for sure… and more eager than ever to practice forgiveness for others and myself!

Rosamund Pike makes this classic a spectacular listen.

Most everyone has had some knowledge of “Pride and Prejudice.” But Rosamund Pike does for Jane Austen what Maggie Gyllenhaal does for “Anna Karenina.” Her range of voice, inflections, snd spirit enliven the text and bring it to life. Such is a gift an actor brings to narration.

Classic

I grew up watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice mini-series and this audiobook felt very in line with that film that it just played out in my head almost exactly as the actual film does. At first I was really put off by Mrs. Bennet's voice and actually almost stopped listening due to it but it grew on me as the book went, I really enjoyed all the other voices.

All women have high-pitched, breathy voices

All women have high-pitched, breathy voices, except Mrs. Hurst. I must pay close attention to tell the female characters apart.

The story, of course, is perfect.
