Publisher's Summary

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen was first published in 1813. The story follows Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, moral rightness, education and marriage in her aristocratic society of early 19th century England. Elizabeth is the second eldest of five daughters of a country gentleman living in the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, not far from London. Though the story's setting is uniquely turn of the 19th century, it remains near the top of lists of 'most loved books' and still receives considerable attention from literary critics. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide.

Best narrator!

This classic novel is brought to life by the reading of Ms. Gavin. She was truly the best and I found her Mrs. Bingley spot on. Other narrators were so shrill, I could not listen to them. I won't go into the details of the story, read it if you haven't, it's timeless. But purchase this version to listen to. It's, by far, the best!

Mr. Darcy meets his MATCH~ VG version Good book~

PLOT: classic Austen book. Proud wealth man falls for intelligent beauty.

This is a very good edition of this book. I listed to about 10 or more samples of books before I purchased this one. Her accent is good and she talks smoothly. It is not the typical ...you have to pay attention to catch every work edition. It does not drag and Margarite Gavin is one of the better readers. I liked it...I will buy more from this reader.

"Pride and Prejudices"

If you could sum up Pride and Prejudice in three words, what would they be?

Pride and Prejudice

What did you like best about this story?

Although it was different time and culture it was relevant to all cultures. We all face and deal with pride and prejudice on a daily basis. Some thinking we are better than others and try to live above our means to fit in. We are so busy thinking others are so beneath us that we don't see just how bad off we really are. It also teaches not to jump to conclusion but to hear the full story first. I started out disliking Darcy and he turned out to be a decent chap. Mrs. Bennett, poor thing! and her daughters, especially Lydia. This was a good family story that let you know that we do not live in a bubble and people are free to choose and make their own decision regardless of what society thinks.

What does Margarite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration was well-done. Hearing the voices, you could also hear the anger, resentment, stupidity and self-righteousness. Also the cold heart turns warm. Very good reading and narration

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Every family has one!

Any additional comments?

At onset I thought this was going to be another Age of Innocence (boring) but it turned out to be very well written and timely.

Unfortunate Narrator Quirks

Would you be willing to try another one of Margarite Gavin’s performances?

I really struggled with Gavin's performance due to a few quirks she has--one of which is a kind of rising hum at the end of sentences. This tends to give all characters and all situations a kind of "snooty" or sarcastic sound--which you may say is appropriate for an Austen novel, but I found it distracting. There is very little range in her delivery of characters--they all sound similar. All events of the novel, no matter the emotional import, are delivered as if they are something to sneer at--again something you may think works for an Austen narrator, but I found it made the novel seem very flat.

There are other versions of Pride and Prejudice on Audible--would recommend those over this one.

Any additional comments?

I've begun reading this book many many times but I just couldn't stay focused on it. The audio was perfect. I could listen as I crocheted keeping both my hands and my mind occupied.

Beloved Story Well Read

Wow! As I purchased this at a bargain price, my expectations weren't too high - often with audio recordings, you get what you pay for, so to speak. It the narrator is excellent, and so was the editing. Gave new life to one of my favorite classics. I will watch for more from this source!

A well read classic

I love the story of Pride and Prejudice and have read, listened to, and watched countless versions. I bought this audio version as it was considerably cheaper than many of the others but the sample seemed to indicate that Margarite Gavin read it tolerably well. I wasn't disappointed and can recommend this version to all.
