Persuasion by Jane Austen

This book was wonderful to listen to! Juliet Stevenson did an outstanding job narrating the book. I loved the ending, of course Ann, Captain Wentworth & Mrs. smith. This is a delightful book. I hated to see the book end!

A complete delight

I didn't know Persuasion - I knew that it was her last novel, published after her death and named Persuasion by her brother but other than that it was a blank. I guessed that as it was a short novel and her last it might not be quite as good or polished as P&P, S&S or Mansfield Park and certainly not being as famous as her other novels suggested that.

HOW WRONG CAN YOU BE! This is now my favourite Jane Austen, its charming, its gentle, its witty and as observational as any of the other novels. Its understory is constancy, doing things as etiquette dictated or for other people and how persuasive actions by others can alter your own personal history and not always for the best. It really is a complete delight.

Juliet Stevenson is also a complete delight - she brings Jane Austen alive and is perfect as the narrator - don't even think of listening to Austen read by anyone else!

Absolutely loved it and is totally recommended to all classic lovers - 7 stars! (what do you mean I can't give it 7 stars - it deserves them!)

Austen and Juliet Stevenson -- perfect match!

Juliet Stevenson is simply the best Austen reader out there. Pay more to get her narrations; they are very much worth the extra. I love Austen, and she's one classical author whose books get a whole new dimension in the audible format. As always, the narrator makes so much difference in the enjoyment of audible books. With Stevenson, you simply cannot go wrong. Persuasion may be the best of Austen's books, and this edition is priceless!

Jane Austen and Juliet Stevenson are Perfect

This combination of talent is ideal for any Austen fan. While not Austen's best work, definitely worth the time. The heroine Anne may not be a favorite but she has her charms. And the Captain is also an easy hero to love.

A visit with dear friends

I see from other reviews that I am among many for whom Persuasion is the favorite of Miss Austen's books. Anne Elliot is my favorite of all her heroines, always evoking my sympathy for her dignity and composure through the trials of her life. Threaded through the story is the theme of not getting what you want the first time around and, for some, a second chance for the golden ring. Whether all these characters get their prize, or even deserve it, is revealed as only Austen can do.

Overall I thought Juliet Stevenson read well, especially conveying Anne's calm exterior and the haughtiness of her father and sister Elizabeth. But at times she overdramatised - making sister Mary sound a bit like Miss Piggy, and at the end, as Mr. Wentworth pours out his heart he sounds more like a distraught female than the hero. Had to downgrade the performance score a bit for those periodic missteps. Still, revisiting this old favorite is as comfortable as a warm cup of tea.

a delightful performance of an excellent novel

One of Austen's most complex and well-wrought novels, performed by a remarkable talent. Romance, satire, and incomparable prose.

Beautiful!

This is one of my favourite Jane Austen books and Juliet Stevenson narrates this brilliantly. Having seen her play Mrs Elton in the movie adaptation of Emma I knew she would be perfect for this. I've downloaded the other Austen books that she narrates now too!

Persuaded

I have read most of Jane Austen's novels annually since my late teens in the normal hard copy format so I know the stories really well. I therefore now choose to hear them as they are like familiar friends and can soothe me after a hard day before sleep. The timbre of Juliet Stevenson's voice lends itself beautifully to these period novels and her characterisation really draws you into the story anew. This was, most definitely a five star listen.

A classic beautifully interpretted

Where does Persuasion rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of my favourite audio books so far - partly because Persuasion is one of my favourite novels of all time, but also because Juliet Stevenson reads it so beautifully.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Stevenson's rendition of Mary complaining about her 'bad luck' was so good that I almost felt sorry for her, in a way I've never done whilst reading the novel. And Anne, the heroine, never seems insipid, which is always the danger when you're a character who is always overlooked by your family, no matter how rude and foolish they are.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I started this book last Friday evening and resented having to turn it off to sleep. My family gave up trying to talk to me on Saturday until it was finished! I've since listened to it again less than a week later.

As fresh as the day it was written

This book is a classic for a very good reason. It sparkles with wit and wonderful characters. It has lost none of its freshness and shows that while the clothes and manners may change, human nature is still the same. A true pleasure to listen to.

Jane Austen's most romantic story read by the most sensitive, expressive reader. Bliss. Just perfection.
