Publisher's summary

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Dorothea Brooke is an outstanding heroine; Middlemarch is filled with characters that are vivid and true, comic and moving. It is one of the greatest novels in the English language.

Loved Middlemarch and Juliet Stevenson!

This book has been on my to-read list for years. This year, I read a a very positive review of Juliet Stevenson's narration in Booklist and decided that the time was right...and I loved it!

Without a doubt, she is one of the best narrators I have ever listened to - ranking up there with Jim Dale, George Guidall and Scott Brick.

Plus, Middlemarch, which had been highly recommended to me by friends who knew I was a fan of Jane Austen, was wonderful. It's a big, big novel, but it really is a timeless classic, full of observations about people that still ring true today.

Give it a go...you won't regret it.

Didn't want it to finish

George Eliot's story of human frailties still captivates after well over a century. Juliet Stevenson brought Middlemarch to life consistently. Her crisp enunciation and brilliant characterisation made listening to this other world a wonderful experience.

I'm now a fan of audiobooks!

I've never listened to an audiobook before, but this one converted me. The story is beautiful, and the characters are well-defined and incredibly human. Juliet Stevenson's performance made this book easy to listen to -- it was a pure joy!

I was daunted by the length of Middlemarch, but now I'm sad to have completed it. I look forward to listening to it again very soon!

A great masterpiece read with love and generosity.

Juliet Stevenson performs Middlemarch as if she had written it herself, for us, her younger siblings, alternately admonishing us with its deep grasp of human nature and social folly, and elevating us with its erudition and glorious language. George Elliot's sublime novel comes to us fully realized - gentle, wise, vivid, encouraging.

Tremendous Narration - love Juliet Stevenson

This book is a difficult one made much easier by the execellentnarration of Juliet Stevenson who makes Dorothea Brooke a pleasure, THe somber nature of the story merits a serious narrator who nonetheless can bring out the beauty of the text and the charm of the characters. Very enjoyable classic mid-19th century novel.

Cool language. Isight brilliant

16 more words...we Americans, especially Protestants, will immediately recognize English snobery and class. We Americans who dont value nuance and rethoric will cringe from the clarity of purpose and articulations without an Iphone.

I loved it.

Phenomenal Story with a Phenomenal Reader

I had no idea what I was in for when I downloaded this book, but two friends told me it was their favorite. I am so glad I listened to them, and chose Juliet Stevenson's rendition. She is a superb reader, and the story is a must read!

Extraordinary Narration

With so many characters in this book, I would have had a difficult time remembering them all if I had read the book myself. Listening to this narrator however, gave me a clear sense of each character - her mastery of changing voices, her inflections, and even her ability to pronounce French, German, and the multitude of English dialects was impressive. The book itself was masterfully written and a pleasure experience.

Just excellent

I am an avid reader of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. I am constantly searching for well-crafted love stories set in the nineteenth century and written with some level of clever depth. This novel, while not a traditional romance, entwines a number of love stories through an intricate depiction of Middlesex England's country life and includes possibly the most interesting turns of phase and creative writing I have ever encountered. George Elliott is my new favorite.

Masterful Narration!

The story was wonderful, and the characters were complex and very well developed. What made this an outstanding audiobook however was the incredible narration by Juliet Stevenson. I have listened to many audiobooks, but my highest praises go to Miss Stevenson. Every character had a very specific and appropriate voice and accent. It was nothing short of amazing.
