Publisher's Summary

One of the world's most famous and influential books, Meditations, by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121 - 180), incorporates the stoic precepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in AD 161, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness.

Reflecting the emperor's own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct, this eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one's personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of inevitable pain, loss, and death - the suffering at the core of life - Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one's control and a focus on one's own will and perception.

This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary listeners. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century but also offers today's listeners a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life.

    "A must own!"
If you could sum up Meditations of Marcus Aurelius in three words, what would they be?

Instructions for life. This book takes simple meditations and applies them to the real life scenario of a Roman emperor. These meditations transfer seamlessly to real life. How to be a leader, how to let things go, how to manage turmoil, and how to be gracious can all be found in this book.

What other book might you compare Meditations of Marcus Aurelius to and why?

The Art of War by Sun Tsu, The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli

What does Kevin Theis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice and performance bring weight and gravitas to this book. You feel as if an emperor is talking to you through the centuries. It is a performance I have yet to see duplicated. A treat for any listener.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book and this performance was extremely empowering. It made me want to reevaluate decisions I had made, and made me think about future decisions I will make. Very inspiring and thought provoking.

    Any additional comments?

This is an amazing performance to behold! I have read this book before but it was never brought to life the way that Kevin Theis does. Truly amazing!

    "Performance makes dry material enjoyable"
Would you consider the audio edition of Meditations of Marcus Aurelius to be better than the print version?

Most definitely, although I haven't read the print version. But the material, I think, would be rather dry on the page. But Kevin's performance makes these words and ideas that are thousands of years old feel like they are coming from a living, breathing person.

What other book might you compare Meditations of Marcus Aurelius to and why?

    The Prince, The Republic

"A complex classic benefits from a skilled narrator"
Would you consider the audio edition of Meditations of Marcus Aurelius to be better than the print version?

The reason to listen to this version of Meditations rather than reading the book (or in addition to reading the book) is to get the assistance of a skilled guide through complex text.

What other book might you compare Meditations of Marcus Aurelius to and why?

Honestly? Parts of the Bible. There are few other works that have the pure instructive, useful power of Meditations.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Theis – was your favorite?

    Marcus Aurelius!

If you could give Meditations of Marcus Aurelius a new subtitle, what would it be?

Life Is Short -- Lead a Good Life and Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

    Any additional comments?

When moving through complex language, with long and winding stepping stones of words from beginning to end of many sentences, it's essential to have a top-notch professional guide to lead you through. Kevin Theis has the intelligence and power and energy to keep the listener on track and engaged.

    "Timeless Wisdom"

An enjoyable narration of a classic study on philosophy of life, purpose and ethics. The meditations of Marcus Aurelius has many good lessons to offer and an interesting study on stoicism. The translation is written in pretty old English but not too hard to understand.

Kevin Theis does a good job in bringing life to the book that I would miss if reading on paper and so I would recommend this audio book.

    "Timeless good advice"
Where does Meditations of Marcus Aurelius rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is among the top of the self help books I have listened to over the decades.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Meditations of Marcus Aurelius?

Truly, the advice on dealing with people who are working to create drama in ones life. His no nonsense approach puts the power and responsibility back into the correct person's hands. Further, the reminder that life and possessions are fleeting so don't over value them was timely for me. I feel this book would be timely for anyone at any time because of the life advice it provides.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Theis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any other performances by Kevin Theis's before.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did not have any extreme reaction, yet there were several places that provided pragmatic reminders to me. And, while I would not call them extreme reactions, there were instances where I had to stop and take in what was being said. The book brought me back to reality in several instances in my life.

    Any additional comments?

I was given this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

"Advice through the ages that sounds like Dad"
What did you love best about Meditations of Marcus Aurelius?

I love history and words. Thus, I love absorbing the words that were written long ago but have stood the test of time. Reading this ignited a newfound fascination with Stoicism as a philosophy. In a lot of ways it isn't much different from what a modern therapist or internet meme might say. You know, "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond." Nice to dig into the very roots of this idea.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

I did read descriptions and reviews of other translations. And I'm sure they have merit. I mean, the movie "O" which was a modernization of Othello was interesting but would lack relevance to anyone who did not understand the original from whence it came. This one has a bit more formal language and is, therefore, more believable as the words of an Emperor.

Which character – as performed by Kevin Theis – was your favorite?

This is a first person memoir / advice column from Marcus Aurelius, himself. This narrator gave a commanding performance in the literal sense of the word.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not a moment, but an aspect. I'm quite fascinated by Stoicism, now, as I mentioned.

    Any additional comments?

I am on a campaign to read and study classic writings, later in life, that I did not get to in my earlier education. I can tell you that I wish I had done it sooner. This "memoir" is bona fide time travel.

Wonderful translation. Orator rushed at the start, but soon finds a comfortable pace.
