Publisher's summary

Using her best social-climbing instincts and refusing to be embarrassed, Lucia sets out to conquer London and mingle with the beau monde. Soon a secret group of 'Luciaphiles' springs up; the social climbers who make up its rank never tire of watching her get into and out of all kinds of trouble.

not bad for an abridgment

I LOVE the Lucia series and dislike abridgments, so I avoided this version for a long time. They did a good job on it, however, and captured the story well. not a big fan of the narrator, but meh, it gave me a Lucia fix for part of my long drive. I wish so much that I could purchase full length of the Mapping and Lucia series on Audible!

Sadly abridged

Miriam Margolyes is an excellent reader--personable without being showy or intrusive.

The story is an evergreen bauble that I have revisited at least five times over the past 35 years.

The text, however, has been needlessly abridged, omitting some of my favorite parts (such as "These duchesses! They give one no peace!"). There are places where the setup to a situation is included but the payoff has been omitted (such as Olga's reaction to Lucia's appraisal that Cortot would have given a better performance of the piece heard on the radio).

Because of the abridgment, I can't recommend this version to anyone who hasn't read the book. At best, it is like being "reminded" of the book, not like experiencing the book.

Abridged

This version is abridged within an inch of its life. Some of the funniest parts are missing. Good reader, tho.

Not as winning as other Lucia tales, tho' fun.

Miriam Margolies, the brilliant actor, is a delightful, energetic narrator but somehow manages to flatten Georgie and make American Adele sound like a gangster's moll. Otherwise, delightful performance of minor Benson gem in the wonderful Lucia saga.
