Publisher's Summary

Little Women is one of the best loved books of all time. Lovely Meg, talented Jo, frail Beth, spoiled Amy: these are hard lessons of poverty and of growing up in New England during the Civil War. Through their dreams, plays, pranks, letters, illnesses, and courtships, women of all ages have become a part of this remarkable family and have felt the deep sadness when Meg leaves the circle of sisters to be married at the end of Part I.

Part II, chronicles Meg's joys and mishaps as a young wife and mother, Jo's struggle to become a writer, Beth's tragedy, and Amy's artistic pursuits and unexpected romance. Based on Louise May Alcott's childhood, this lively portrait of 19th-century family life possesses a lasting vitality that has endeared it to generations of readers and listeners.

Little Women

Great book, old school language makes it even more surreal. Have some Kleenex ready as it has some real moments of true sadness. Great storyline of true family.

First read as a preteen; reread in my fifties.

This book was selected for my book club. At first I had little desire to read it but started it and then got too involved in it to stop. It's well written although a bit too sentimental and moralistic at times. But Ms. Alcott hits upon many real emotions and struggles throughout the book. I did not appreciate these attributes as a preteen. Once you have read Little Women, try the contemporary novel March by Geraldine Brooks. It's the story of the father while he was away at war. Definitely not a child's book.

Very Enjoyable

If you could sum up Little Women in three words, what would they be?

Classic... Heart... Life

What other book might you compare Little Women to and why?

Little Women is in a league by itself. Why try to compare others?

What about Kate Reading’s performance did you like?

Kate's voice is very pleasant and she does an excellent job with all the characters' voices. I never once wondered who was talking. The story really comes alive with a great narrator. Thank you, Kate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. I wanted to take my time with it. And did. It was great to listen to in the car on my work commute. Very calming but engaing.

Any additional comments?

I am so glad to have narrator choices with Audible, so that I can sample and pick the one I think will suit me best. Thank you, Audible, for the variety!

Fantastic audio edition of a beloved classic

Would you listen to Little Women again? Why?

I'm sure I will. The story is a timeless delight. I loved it as a girl and still do as an adult. Reading does a flawless job of bringing the characters and the story to life.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Little Women?

The final proposal for Jo because it's funny and heartwarming.

Have you listened to any of Kate Reading’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've not, but I definitely would. She's talented and has a fantastic voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This long story does both. Some parts are hysterical and others touching. There's a reason we still love it.

A classic story of family, of childhood, of love.

Everyone knows the story of Little Women, and another review will mean nothing. However, there is one thing that surprised me which I want to mention. I had always thought of this book as a story of the Civil War and its effects for families. While part of the story does discuss the hardship of these four girls and their mother I would not say the book spends much time there and the plot says little about the war. I expected a little of Gone With the Wind -- a book that talks much about the difficulties for women and children living in the South at the time. I hoped for some of that same discussion here. Because of that, I can only give it four stars.

Excellent

I love Little Women. I first watched the film with Winona Ryder before reading the book, but think they complement each other. I love the little moralising stories, with good overcoming evil, and hard work, patience and fortitude winning the day. It is a story I always feel uplifted having listened to (despite some tears at certain points). I found Kate Reading a very good narrator - one of the most important things when in audio format.
