Publisher's summary

Jack London's tales of man's struggle against the forces of nature are universally popular. Best known for his novels The Call of the Wild and White Fang, London was also a prolific writer of short stories. This collection brings together four of his finest, all depicting the harshness of life in the frozen arctic wastes.

'The Law of Life' and 'The White Silence' offer sensitive insights into the psychological state of men facing death in the wildness; the lure of gold grips the heartstrings of two opportunists with disastrous consequence in 'In a Far Country'; and 'An Odyssey of the North' recounts one man's painful quest to reclaim the women he loves.

The reader William Dufris has worked thoughout Britain and the United States in theatre and has made numerous television and radio appearances for the BBC.

Great Reader

I love Jack London so I am very biased with the writing but this is a very good production too. The narrator/reader has an excellent voice and is excited with the writing but not so much as to be distracting. He doesn't do exaggerated stupid voices however he does change it up when he does a voice but it is in his register, in other words he doesn't strain to make the different voices he uses different regional accents to differentiate the characters. Some of these old classic titles have old and board readers who have a style best described as a drone. Just because the title is old doesn't mean it needs to be read like an old dusty book. Jack London wrote intense sometimes brutal adventure but he nails the human side. The humans thoughts and ruminations are as intense as the brutality and action of their acts. William has a good pace with perfect inflections and thoughtful pauses where needed, not forced. It helps that the audio sounds recent and clear with good highs and lows. Some of the older recordings sound muffled like they were read through a pillow and as such they put me to sleep. I am now in search of more William Dufris titles I wish he had read all of the London titles.
