Julio Verne (1828-1905) - Escritor francés considerado el padre de la ciencia ficción moderna. Nació en Nantes el 8 de febrero de 1828 y estudió leyes en París. De 1848 a 1863 escribió libretos de ópera y obras de teatro. Verne despertó vivamente el interés por la ciencia y los inventos en el siglo XIX. Documentaba sus fantásticas aventuras y predijo con asombrosa exactitud muchos de los logros científicos del siglo XX. Escribió sobre cohetes espaciales, submarinos, helicópteros, aire acondicionado, misiles dirigidos e imágenes en movimiento, mucho antes de que aparecieran estos inventos. Las obras de Verne han sido llevadas al cine en numerosas ocasiones. La primera adaptación cinematográfica de "Un viaje a la luna" fue realizada por el pionero cineasta francés Georges Méliès. En 1892 fue distinguido con la Legión de Honor y pocos años más tarde moría en Amiens el 24 de marzo de 1905.
Tres guardianes son designados para cuidar un nuevo faro situado en la Isla de los Estados, una isla localizada a 200 kilómetros al noreste del Cabo de Hornos, al Sur de Argentina. Desafortunadamente, la isla cuenta entre sus residentes con un grupo de piratas liderados por Kongre. El grupo había estado esperando durante años la oportunidad de apoderarse de un barco y así abandonar el lugar. Los bandidos asesinan a dos de los guardianes y toman posesión del faro.
