Publisher's Summary

Dating from between the 8th and 11th century Beowulf is the oldest known English epic poem. Beowulf is a narrative poem about the kings and heroes of Denmark and Geatland. It is a story of mythic creatures and medieval battles between men and monsters. Follow the adventures of Beowulf, the story's title character, as he battles the Grendel, the Grendel's mother, and a dragon. As you listen imagine yourself in one of the taverns or royal courts of Old England hearing the great epic Beowulf, for the first time as you might well have then. Passed down by oral tradition Beowulf's author is to this day unknown. The original manuscript was written in Anglo-Saxon or Old English. Presented here is the faithful translation of Francis B. Gummere.

    "A classic through and through."

Austin Vanfleet does a great job at narrating this classic epic poem. If you do not know the tale and do not feel like waiting though an old text, this is a great way to hear it for the first time. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

    "Epic tale retold in English"

One of the oldest stories of good bs evil. Hero's, villains, monsters, ancient weapons. The tale of Beowulf has been made into movies, translated into multiple languages and presented in just about every format one can think of. This epic retelling of the story doesn't disappoint. Enjoy this amazing well narrated story. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

I read all kinds of books, but I have an obsession with paranormal and fantasy at the moment. Sorry about any spelling mistakes/typos.

    Story
    "A Classic for Good Reason"

A classic tale of good versus evil, good guy versus bad guy etc. The story is captivating from beginning to the end.

The translation uses an older style of English than what we speak now, normally I can listen to a book while doing something else, but with this one I needed to just listen to keep track of what was happening.

Loved listening to it, the narration is well done, has a good flow and rythum.

This book was supplied free by the author/narrator/publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

    Story
"Um, I thought this was English? Haha"

I have seen the movie Beowulf and so I thought the book might be a nice listen to expand on the story. Well, it would have if I could have UNDERSTOOD MORE THAN A FEW BLEEPING WORDS OF IT AT A TIME

Okay, I understood more than a few words of it. But even though this classic was translated into English, it was OLD English and uses words and terms completely lost to all but the literature snobs and historians. So, unless you are accustomed to this archaic use of the language the narrator may as well be speaking a language other than English.

The narration did not help! The narrator spoke way too fast, as if his job was to get through it without making any mistakes instead of delivering the prose at a pace it could be ingested, processed, and better understood at least through surmising the meaning of some of the words, phrases, and the action going on. If you compare this narration with the two others on Audible, they are 23 and 29 minutes longer than this one for the same text. That is significant for a story that is only 2:12 minutes long as it is!

I was given a review copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.
