Publisher's summary

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century. In this story of "kindred spirits", McAdams' touching and heartfelt narration proves she is just that - bonded on a deep level to this shimmering classic.

When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.

Amazing. Listen to this book.

I am sitting on a bench outside my son's school, having just finished listening to Anne of Green Gables, and I am actually crying. The story was lovely, made even lovelier by Rachel McAdams' narration. If she doesn't do the next book in the series, I don't know what I will do with my life.

Great reading

I love the intonation and inflections in Rachel's voice. You can tell that the story means a lot to her and now it does to me as well. Thank you, Audible!

Terrible Narration!

Would you listen to Anne of Green Gables again? Why?

Yes I love the story and I love audio books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anne of course. Because of her lively spirit and wild imagination.

Would you be willing to try another one of Rachel McAdams’s performances?

No! Her performance was terrible. She has no scope for imagination. I've never given up on an audio book before, but I'm ready to return this version. I'd rather listen to a choppy robotic voice. At least I would expect that to be monotone. I would have expected a professional actress to give a better performance. Her voice was monotone and drab. She seemed unable to change voices between narration and various characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite part of the book is when Gilbert saves her at the river and she stubbornly isn't ready to forgive him.

Any additional comments?

Rachel McAdams, please, just don't narrate any more books unless it's a drab memoir.

a classic

First time author for me, debut novel for the author although she had written some short stories and poems prior to this novel.

Written in 1908 and set in the late 1800's on Prince Edward Island in Canada, this is the story of an 11 year old girl, a red headed orphan with high energy that is adopted by a family who thought they were getting a boy from the orphanage. Anne warmed their hearsts as well as those of the community.

This story is perfect for pre-teen girls.

Beautifully Read and Brilliant Story

This is PERFECT for anyone with a child who needs more advanced narrative but who can’t stand anything scary. I have a sensitive six-year-old son and he’s head over heels for this book. He can’t do anything even a little scary—he gets really nervous if he even thinks a book *might* be scary. The one part where Anne imagines ghosts in the wood was really hard for him, but everything else has been fantastic. And we’ve had interesting conversations about why Anne dislikes her hair so much. I have a feeling we’ll be listening to it more than once or twice.

And, I admit, this book has charmed me again after beginning it for him.

Rachel McAdams has mixed reviews, but I loved her reading and am very sorry this was a once-off Audible stunt casting and she didn’t read at least a few more books deeper into the series. The story comes alive with texture and the characters shine with her nuanced presentation of the text.

These reviews are SHOCKING

The negative reviews are rather shocking. I have so enjoyed Rachel McAdams performance as I can hear Anne, as told through Megan Follows, in this performance. The breathiness when Anne gets excited? Perfection.

Beautiful, wholesome story

A beautiful story of a girl that loves nature and the world, even though she had such a troublesome beginning to her life.
Makes you wish you had the same spirit.
