Publisher's summary

Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the inscrutable world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Classic tale perfectly narrated

A compelling work brilliantly captures the horrors of war and makes it personal. Frank Muller’s narration is near perfect. I found myself literally squirming in my seat at several points in the story as he relentlessly pulled me forward. I anguished for Paul and his comrades. This one is not to be missed!

mixed audio with speakers

Great story, and the performance was really good. The only issue it's that without headphones the audio was. inconsistent throughout. It might have been a mixture of the performance with questionable audio mixing, barring that great book.

Still oh so relevant...

The horrors of war and the camaraderie that makes it bearable and at the same time unbearable shines through. It is hard to believe that 88 years after its first publish it can still transfix the 21st century psyche. A must read for anyone who would put 'glory' and 'war' in the same sentence. In terms of the translation... Minimal disjointed thoughts but otherwise smooth. In terms of the narration... Superb.

harsh reality

This is a pretty intense book. They all said it was the best wartime novel but I didn't believe that it would be this good. Also Frank Muller does an excellent job with his voice to really convey the emotion and somberness of the novel.

Eye opening

I had never been assigned this title as a youth. My daughter was and asked me to read it so we could discuss it.

This should be required reading.

The performance is top notch audio book. A few spots were questionable when it came to emoting the words on the page. Maybe a little over dramatic.

An amazing listen

I had heard of this book before but I had never expected this.

This is truly a story of war. With details that to some listeners will shock, and in some cases, horrify them. The scenes depicted are very vivid and well spoken by the narrator. It's really rather outstanding how well it was done.

Heavy hitting WWI brutality of war experience

If you ever find yourself enthralled over reviewing war history from the comfort of your armchair and excitedly deciphering tactical commands and war victoryfrom hindsight.
Then take a step back into the front lines of WWI from the eyes of a youthful common German soldier, a young man who grew calloused and hardened on the front lines.
This account is extremely powerful and conveys emotions and pain from real loss and love.
Highly recommended for mature thinkers that don't mind feeling some pain.

Wonderfully Sad

This is a great performance. It took me a few chapters to get used to the long pauses, but I felt as if I needed those pauses by the end.

The story itself is heartbreaking in its detail. Here I sat, 100 years later, listening to such a tale as enjoyment. Our warfare tactics have changed so much. I am moved by this novel and this performance of it.
