A father unburdens himself to his children in a letter accompanying his will that details a shocking act committed when he was a young man, and at the time he was engaged to their mother. Oliver Montgomery’s performance of the final testimony of a burdened man is by turns tragic and melancholy in this excerpt from the Normandy Stories collection of Guy de Maupassant short stories. The disturbing revelation of the depths of human venality in a "reasonable" man is a prime example why these word portraits by the French short story master have been so acclaimed around the world and down through the generations.
