Elle is employed as a servant in her stepmother’s home. She has been looking forward to the town spring festival for months and she even prepared an intricate and elaborate costume for herself. On the day of the festival, her stepmother and stepsisters destroy her costume. Although, she is heartbroken at the destruction of something she worked so hard on, she manages to find a backup costume and sneaks away to the festival.

Prince Alexander is unbelievably shy and socially awkward, a rather annoying trait for anyone but especially for a prince who is expected to find and marry someone within the next three months. Frustrated and worried, he seeks the advice of a family of dwarves who live in Castle Woods. The leader, Alec, advises him to travel around a bit and learn more about his kingdom. So, he does.

After three weeks, Alexander finds himself in the town of Lund just in time for their spring festival. There he encounters Elle in rather unusual circumstances. They form an immediate friendship which changes both of their lives forever.
