Christy

This is a wonderful story - based on Catherine Marshall's mothers life - you feel you are there in those mountains living life alongside Christy. I read the book many years ago and this audio of the story was excellent. Highly recommend it.

Great Listen

If you loved the TV series, you'll love the novel. Although the ending is very disappointing, which is the only reason I didn't give this five stars, the audiobook begins with a interview with the author's son that explains how the story is based on the true story of his grandmother. He also explains that the ending of the novel is not exactly based on the true story, but was changed to surprise the reader on purpose. Knowing that made it better. If the author had stuck to the her mother's true story, it would have made for a happier ending. Other than that, the story of Christy and her Mountain People is charming and entertaining. That fact that Kelly Martain reads it, who played Christy on the hit TV show, only makes it that much better. She get's the accents of the characters down so well, you feel like you are taken to the Mountains of Tennessee. Kelly's voice telling this story, really pulls at your heartstrings. It was worth the download!

One of the greatest books of all time!

What did you love best about Christy?

I have read this book about 4 times since I was a teenager. Now I'm in my fifties and I love it just as much as the first time I read it. Listening to the story is even better. You feel as if you are really there with Christy as she lived that time in her life. It is a very compassionate and loving story revealing the way of life in the appalachian mountains in the early 1900's. It is a very enjoyable and spiritual Christian story that takes you through many emotions as felt by Christy and the other individuals she meets in the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Christy for her youthfulness, excitement, vision, eagerness, vitality, innocence, and bravery.

Have you listened to any of Kellie Martin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Kellie Martin's narration of this book is terrific! I remember her when she played Christy on television and she played the role very believably. Her voice was very clear and it was very easy to follow the story and to distinguish the difference in each character. She was able to create the emotions felt by each character.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

When you read this book you experience various emotions, including: love, hate, disgust, admiration, compassion, etc. It is very difficult to put the book down and I was sad to have the story end. I wanted to go on and on finding out what else was happening to and around Christy.

Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to everyone! A one time read is not enough. It's an enjoyable story for teenagers through older adults.

A great book made even better!

I have read Christy over a dozen times, and it remains one of my top ten all-time favorites. It is a beautiful a and inspirational story of a young girl's growing up and growing love for God, for others, and for one special man.
Many reviews have been written giving a synopsis of this book, so my goal is to thank Kellie Martin for her flawless narration of this book. She brought to life the lyrical, descriptive prose that so often sounds like the most beautiful music / poetry ever written.
I have never enjoyed "spending" a credit more than when I purchased this book. I know that I will be listening to it many more times!

I enjoyed most all moments of the book.I loved how she interacted with the children, how she eventually fit in with the women and learned the mountain folk ways.

good story but narration is distracting

The book is really 4.5 stars. It's an excellent story, although there are a few loose ends. I first read it when I was 12 or 13, and I still enjoy the story.

The narration, however, was very distracting to me. I'd rate it at about 2.5 to 3 stars. I like Kellie Martin, and when she's just narrating it's mostly fine. But, all her characters sound the same. The only difference was if they were from "the cove" or not. It was frustrating, especially during dialogue scenes. It was hard to keep track of who was speaking, and there were several times when I had it wrong. All in all, I'd prefer to read it than listen to her narration.

One bonus of the audio, though, is an interview with the author's son. It was very interesting and answered one of the complaints I had about the ending. However, if you don't know the story, wait to listen to the interview until after you've finished the book as it gives the ending away. For some reason, the interview is at the beginning. It would have been better if they'd put it at the end.

Overall, it's a good story for young and old alike.

Love it.

Any additional comments?

I love the Christy story. Have enjoyed the TV/ movie series and thought it was brilliant to bring Kellie Martin in to narrate, who was the original Christy on screen. Could not say a bad thing about this collection. Wish there were more.

Christy

This was a compelling and inspirational book. The author was convincing in making one believe that there are individuals that are courageous and determined enough to follow through with their convictions.
