Publisher's summary

"This tender love story between two wounded people whom God brings together for healing is a book readers will enjoy anytime—but especially at Christmas"—Francine Rivers, New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love and A Voice in the Wind

Amid war and the fading dream of the Confederacy, a wounded soldier and a destitute widow discover the true meaning of Christmas—and sacrificial love.

Recently widowed, Aletta Prescott struggles to hold life together for herself and her six-year-old son. With the bank threatening to evict them, she discovers an advertisement for the Women's Relief Society auction and applies for a position—only to discover it's been filled. Then a chance meeting with a wounded soldier offers another opportunity—and friendship. But can Aletta trust this man?

Captain Jake Winston, a revered Confederate sharpshooter, suffered a head wound at the Battle of Chickamauga. When doctors deliver their diagnosis, Jake fears losing not only his greatest skill but his very identity. As he heals, Jake is ordered to assist with a local Women's Relief Society auction. He respectfully objects. Kowtowing to a bunch of "crinolines" isn't his idea of soldiering. But orders are orders, and he soon discovers this group of ladies—one, in particular—is far more than he bargained for.

Set against the backdrop and history of the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee, Christmas at Carnton is a story of hope renewed and faith restored at Christmas.

Loved the story *and* narrator!

Usually I just love a story but hate the narrator and vice versa. But this time I loved both. The southern accents were just enough, and the male impersonations didn't detract from the story at all.

The storyline has quite the twist, which had me examining my thought process for a bit.

A lovely book, that didn't try to make a ton of angst, misunderstandings, and tension between the main characters. It made the two seem more normal rather than the soap opera caricatures many authors like to present.

This book didn't give me a headache from the characters doing and saying stupid things, nor did it cause me to shut it off because I couldn't take the foolishness.

I was so deep into the story that I lost all sense of time and place. For me, that means it's exceptionally well written and narrated. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Its worth your time to read this one.

I visited the Carnton plantation just outside of Nashville Tennessee and found this book, so I thought it would be a nice compliment to the visit. It was, nice interweave of history and a love story. Really gave me a picture of the times. I really liked the reader

At Last-- Historically Correct !

Christmas at Carnton is a good read if you like CSA history. I have given Alexander 5 stars. There are some authors I have given very poor ratings because they try to twist history and end up with a mess. In this book, Tamera Alexander uses her attention into historical truth to create characters with heart and purpose. Jake and Aletta face loss and heartbreak by leaning on God's goodness. Details similar to those portrayed in authentic letters from real people of 1863 make this book authentic. Excellent romance too. Thank you for doing the research, Tamera Alexander!

Loved It

I just discovered this Author and I read all three books in this series in less than a week. However the narrator in this one was good but sometimes the characters sounded the same. Other than that it was great!

This truly brings the Christmas Spirit.

I love the story telling of this author. I recognize Captain Jones from a different novel by the same author. I love all her books.

Not my favorite

The story was predictable but ok. The narrator was terrible.. Not a Southern genteel sounding voice. I couldn't listen past the 12th chapter. I hope I can swap it for another book.

short and sweet!

I had no idea how much I love feel good books! I really like Tamera Alexander's books and this is no different. I wish it was longer, but it's short and sweet! My only problem is the narrator, it was way too fast, but I was able to slow it down to make it better!

Story good; writing marginal

I rolled my eyes a lot at the sappy writing. The story itself was good, but could have been told in a much better way. The narrator has a good voice, but was a bit monotone and boring. I nearly returned the book several times.

Short and sweet

It was a difficult decision for me to use one credit to purchase such a short audio book. I still think it was too short, but I knew that going into it so I can't downgrade it in my review. I think it was a sweet story. I just wish there had been more to it! Also, just a minor criticism, while the narrator did a great job and was not annoying in anyway, I would have expected more of a southern drawl in the speaking voices of the Civil War South. This was a sweet Christmas story.
