How could a Swedish Eurovision representative with one of the worst results ever for the country get to be in charge for the entire show for two decades?

How did his job affect his friends and family, not least his husband/tuft-of-grass Martin Kagemark, who himself is a talented singer who had to take a step back due to Christer's position?
