Publisher's Summary

Chase Hillier has plans, and nothing will cause her to deviate from them. So far, they're pretty simple: Get through her first year of college with good grades, read a lot of books, and hopefully find a cute boyfriend who could turn into her husband someday. She's got it all mapped out. No one is going to stand in her way. Not even her roommate, Cordelia Scott.

Cordelia Scott has her own plans: Get through her freshman year without too many panic attacks, figure out what the hell she wants to major in, and meet a guy who finally makes her heart flutter.

Fate has other plans for the two when they end up as roommates and neither of them can stop thinking about the other. They're both absolutely sure that they like boys and not girls. But their sparks can't be extinguished, and they realize there is a lot more to their connection with each other than either of them thought. How will they navigate a path that neither of them planned on taking

Very Sweet Story of Young Love; Terrific Narration

“Chord” is book #2 in “The OTP” series, and is the sequel to “Style”. I wonder what “OTP” stands for…it’s not explained on Audible or Amazon, nor did I find anything explanatory after a brief Google search. Well, I’m going to call it the “Officially Too Perfect” series, because the characters, their friends, their families, the story and the narration are….wait for it….too perfect….officially! ;)

If you’re looking for drama, angst, misunderstandings, homophobia, cheaters, dark pasts, or sinister people….look/listen elsewhere. Chord will immerse you in a wonderful world of likable, kind, loving people at the brink of adulthood, filled with optimism for the future, whatever that may be, and learning about themselves and accepting that they are very different from who they thought they were. This is a very sweet, enjoyable story. If you’ve been reading/listening to Melissa Brayden’s “Seven Shores” series (and who hasn’t?), and you’re anxiously awaiting sweetly optimistic, Disney loving Hadley’s story in the yet unpublished book #4, “Love Like This” (and who isn’t?)…you will really love this book.

First year college students MCs Chase and Cordelia are computer-assigned as roommates. Chase is often anxious around others, and Cordelia too-frequently suffers panic attacks, but they become fast friends and comfort each other. Wow…do they comfort each other (oops…jumping ahead too much!). Their dormitory neighbors are Stella and Kyle, the now girlfriends MCs from “Style”. It was delightful spending more time with Stella and Kyle throughout the book. Their friendships with Chase and Cordelia are integrated very nicely.

Chase and Cordelia make a mutual pact to find boyfriends by the end of the year, but each are frequently confused and flustered by their feelings for each other. By the way, I really liked the author’s dedication at the beginning of the book:

”For all the girls who think they might like girls…this one’s for you”.

The evolution of each girl’s understanding of herself, and of their mutual recognition of their feelings for each other is sweet, and frequently made me smile. Chase, Cordelia and their friends felt real, and I felt happy spending time with them. The story uses alternating POVs, and I really enjoyed being inside each of their heads, hearing what each of them thought, as they thought of themselves and of each other.

I’ve just deleted a few more comments, because I’m going to end this as a relatively short review; anything more I would say would end up as spoilers, and I want you to enjoy the journey for Chase and Cordelia as the fresh story of young love, and young lust, that it is. Tenderness and communication abounds, which I really enjoyed in this New Adult storyline.

As with “Style”, “Chord” ends with an HFN rather than an HEA…which I found completely acceptable, given that Chase and Cordelia are only 19yo. Narrator Sophie Daniels did a fantastic job, as she did for “Style”. By the way (ok, I guess this is a bit of a spoiler….but it’s minor), it turns out that I was wrong in assuming “Style” derived it’s title from Stella and Kyle meeting in their high school english class: STella, kYLE…sort of like CHase, cORDelia…so cute!! Now I want to go bowling, even with the stinky shoes….ooops….no more spoilers!

CHase and cORDelia

I have not read Style, so I read this without any real expectations. It's purely fluff, so as long as that's what you're expecting, it's great! The side characters don't do much except offer help/advice to the main characters along the way. As an asexual, I smiled when the author introduced one of the side characters as ace as well. Every chapter starts with chase's perspective, then switches over to cordelia's perspective. I prefer chase's perspective since I'm always anxious and feel the need to plan as well. What I liked best is how the story started off having the feelings but not having a word to describe them. I feel that all the time, when you desire to be close to someone but can't explain it. Oh, and I totally dig bedtime stories. Given the names Cordelia / Chase, I thought we might get a buffy the vampire slayer reference. I kept waiting for a reference to willow, but after reading the story, it's just a coincidence.

The girls are nervous and unsure of themselves for a good chunk of the story, and Sophie did a great job making me feel it. Chase starts off worried about college, and Sophie sounds like an antsy teen. There was one spot early on where I mixed up who was talking, but I think that was more me than the narrator. For reference, chase has the deeper voice.

A quality queer book

Overall the book was amazing, very positive. I loved every second of it!

The only issue I have is a very minor one. The author uses the same phrase ‘you can’t do that’ a lot, by both characters. For whatever reason, hearing it interrupted the story for me, since it seemed to be used a lot, in the exact same manner each time. I would have preferred a bit more variation in the phrase

Weak Follow-up

Style was an excellent book about a couple of 18 year old high school seniors; one of whom is unaware that she's a lesbian, the other who has decided to wait for college to pursue a relationship with another woman in order to avoid the small town drama she's sure will ensue. Kyle and Stella the ingenues from Style are back; in supporting roles this time and don't help this book very much. Chase and Cordelia aren't bad characters and the book has it's moments but somehow I can't help but feel like it's a rush job. The numerous interactions between the characters are repetitive and fail to provide anything substantive. Although it makes me feel like a grandma to write this, there are too many sex scenes in the book. The existence of multiple sex scenes is not in and of itself a problem; the problem is that they are generic, repetitive and fail in moving the story forward. I don't hate this offering from Ms. Cameron but any sequel from such an entertaining, realistic story as Style shouldn't be as mediocre as this one.

Absolutely Awesome

Straight off the batt, if you have not already listened to, or read Style, also written by Chelsea M. Cameron, I suggest listening to that one first as it really is a precursor to this book Chord but otherwise this book does stand alone as an awesome story.

I really did enjoy this story particularly because of the bleed through from Style, that of which I am not going to say as I want it to be a nice surprise. Chord is a really enjoyable potentially realistic romantic, and positive coming out story with great characters that are really lovable and endearing. I particularly like the nickname Carrots, so endearing.

I very much recommend this book Chord and the accompanying Style to everyone but particularly so to those who are curious or questioning their sexual orientation as they offer a gentle delve into life’s possibilities. I also recommend these books to anyone similar to myself who just loves girls and is a romantic at heart. I’m a straight guy with a romantic soul who just loves girls and has no interest in reading a romance from the perspective of guys as I personally have zero interest in blokes myself. (I hope my point of view doesn’t offend anyone as it is not my intention), I very much want to support the lgbtqia+ community, and feel we should celebrate diversity and rally against prejudice.

I paid the full Audible price of $15 AUD for this book and I am really glad I did as I have really enjoyed listening to Style and Chord and will be checking out other books written by Chelsea M. Cameron.

Fair warning, unlike Style which has mild sex scenes, Chord contains quite a bit of sex scenes that start mildly but quickly work up to awesomely graphic sex scenes that really paint an enticing scenario.

I would like to acknowledge the narrator Sophie Daniels as doing a fantastic job in creating really endearing, unique characters in both books and doing the authors wonderful stories justice.

Lastly if you are looking for other great young lesbian romances I very much recommend these books/series; All of which have great narrators.
