Publisher's Summary

The explosive final chapter in the critically acclaimed China series, from the best-selling Richard and Judy author of The Blackhouse

Gruesome murders.

His victims are young, beautiful and coldly mutilated. He calls himself the Beijing Ripper. Li Yan, head of Beijing's serious crime squad, must stop him.

Fearsome letters.

Just as pathologist Margaret Campbell finds an insight into the killer's sick signature, Li receives a letter from the killer, betraying his cruel intentions.

Chinese whispers.

There's no way Li can misinterpret the Ripper's motives: he wants to tear Li and Campbell's lives apart and write the darkest chapter in Beijing's history.

Not sure how to rate this

I am specifically referring to this story in the series, but it is coloured by my impressions of the entire series.

I finally get to fully understand ‘White Privilege’. Being a person of colour, I only know that it exists and see the results but, in the whole telling of these stories I actually got to live through it! It wasn’t until this particular story that I was able to call it what it is! I have never liked the character of Dr Margaret, something about her rubbed me up the wrong way from the very beginning when she landed in China not having read her briefing notes... Now, 5 or more years later, she is no better, no wiser and despite having a mixed race child, has not even attempted to learn the language! Not Even Attempted! Then she takes her supercilious attitude to renew her visa! I was so happy with how she was treated there! That’s not a nice thing to say, but wait until you get to it.... if you’re a stranger in a STRANGE country, be respectful and compliant. She wasn’t: White Privilege, right there!

In other aspects of the story, I’m amazed that they ‘STILL’ haven’t joined the dots with ‘phone tapping’. (That’s just a theory). This is the saddest story of series, I’ve seen the reviews for the next one, a novella that apparently doesn’t tie up the loose ends from this one, too many loose ends. However, my overwhelming feeling from this book was that; I Really Don’t Like Dr Margaret Campbell.

However - this is a fascinating look at the Chinese culture, traditions and attitudes. The stories are great and the Narrator is perfect! But the central characters are lacking, even Lei Win. But Dr Margaret? Yuck! It speaks to the greatness of the story telling that, despite of her, I thoroughly enjoyed the series.

Lovely to finally have the full set

I've been waiting for a while for Peter Forbes to read this and I wasn't disappointed. The master of audiobooks has produced another thrilling performance. While not one of Peter May's best books, it was read with such skill that I enjoyed it throughout.

Compelling story yet again

Chinese Whispers is well written and told by the May/Forbes partnership. You can feel the tension and frustration building in the characters as the story line unfolds against the race of time. It keeps you guessing throughout.

I have finished listening to all the China Thriller books now and each one has been totally engrossing and engaging because of Peter May's outstanding story writing and the absorbing characters that he creates. All of these books are bought brilliantly to life by the exceptional narration of Peter Forbes who makes the characters so real and believable that you feel you know them!

These books are fabulous entertainment and will not disappoint the listener. My only regret is the I have finished all of them and must sadly say goodbye to Margaret and Lee.
